Quote: Thats the flip side. I pay about 4k but bought 5 years ago. That’s why I mentioned it gets better with time. Now 4k in retirement should be a good deal 20 plus years from now.
it a great deal for you, and it will only get worse for your neighbor who buys in 20 years and has to pay more because they had the misfortune of being born 20 years after you. It does indeed get better with time, for some.

but hey, soon we will be able to pass our tax rates on to our kids so they’ll have a leg up for no logical reason.

They pay 1.1% of the price at the time. Just like everyone before them had to. The person born in 20 years that pays more for a house will also make more $. Now we’re having more of a conversation about inflation. Seems like we just disagree. No problem.

yes. So two neighbors with identical homes can pay tax rates that differ by orders of magnitude, and the person with more wealth pays less. But hey, they deserve it because they had the luck to be born earlier.

If we want to hand wave it away as just an artifact of inflation, we would have to actually look at home values vs inflation, and probably some talk of wage growth in there, too.

Remember that the 21k is deductible off your federal taxes, so really it’s probably closer to 15k.

Live where you want to live. Don’t sweat the little stuff.
Nope, remember that the Trump tax cuts only allowed a total of $10,000 in state and local taxes to be deductible.

You all can keep your tax rates where they are for all I care. Just don't bring those tax rates to my state, or try to justify arresting some guy for paddle boarding alone, on the ocean, away from people during a pandemic, while allowing people who shoplift less than $1000 worth of goods, or who openly shoot up drugs on the street to walk free.
I figured out a while ago to vote and stop caring after I did. All the outrage only affects your own space. Too little time in this world to be aggrieved.

Now I do read the paper and have opinions like everyone else. But trying to discuss opinions only creates conflicts. Why bother.

Getting old does have advantages I guess.

one of the neighbors paid 30 years of payroll tax to have a low property tax. The other didn’t but will eventually unless they move out of state. We disagree. Moving along.

what does payroll tax have to do with property tax? They didn’t pay the payroll tax so that they could enjoy the lower property tax. And is your contention that the younger person won’t pay payroll tax?

Amen.......

Both are a way for a state to collects revenue/tax from its citizens. We’re comparing Florida and California. In California the older person will be done with payroll tax when they retire at which point they can enjoy the low property tax they built over time as the value of thier property went up. It’s an advantage over Florida over time and once retired thats paid for while your working. You don’t like it and I understand why. I do like it. I guess ca could go to some graduated property tax that increases tax with increased value but at that point I would want no payroll tax like Florida.

i understand that both are ways that a state collects revenue. The fact that someone did pay payroll taxes (at a lower rate than the younger person) doesn’t justify offering that person a lower tax rate on the exact same piece of property. Older homeowners are being subsidized by younger for no logical reason at all. As I said before, it’s simply that California homeowners said “**** you, I got mine” to everyone unlucky enough to be born later than them.
