Default In Aircraft Training vs Sim

Yea, it is expensive and dangerous and hasn’t been done in decades.

But other than that… is it actually impossible to conduct 121 training in an airplane, in whole or in part, if a lack sim availability forces the issue? (For example, pull a 777 from the desert to use for reserve pilot bounces)

That was one of the main uses of the jumpseat in the 50s and 60s. Sims did not exist for the Connie, as an example. From what I have been told observer trainee pilots wore one stripe on some airlines. (Now you know the basis of why CA wear 4, FO wear 3, and FE wore 2.) They had to ‘earn their stripes’ much like the military.

It could be done, but by the time a program was qualified, it might be 2023. By that time, I suspect additional sims will be delivered and operational. Meanwhile, I think the airlines are going to be between a rock and a hard place.

guess that’s the question. Is there anything that can be done now? Seems like landing currency could.

It was common to do some of the training in the aircraft in turboprops around 20 years ago - I know I did.

15 % of the training, if I recall. Takeoffs and landings, normal and engine out (idle).

Yes, I did that in both props and jets.

But for all the varied approaches, wx conditions, and emergency procedures it's usually pretty impractical to do it in a plane. Think about the all the boxes that get checked on a PC or MV. Not to mention safety... how many times can you stall a swept-wing jet for training before something bad happens?

That was because they were level C sims if I remember correctly. We had to do three takeoffs and landings in the actual airplane. Level D sims take care of that.

The cost to do pattern work in a 777 would be staggering.

You don’t need a 777 for that. I actually came across some footage of a group of reserve pilots doing bounces on their own.

In aircraft training didn’t go quite as planned for these two carriers.

Although, there are a number of CFR 135 operators that conduct training and type rating rides in their aircraft for SIC Type Ratings, following guidances published in the FSIMS.
