Airlines could do that, but why would they give up revenue? If the passenger demand is high enough that they could sell single seats at those higher rates, why would they A) not already be charging that rate and B) hold back pairs of seats for a single passenger that would literally be sold at half price?

Airlines can figure out how many seats per flight would be affected by fat people spilling over into the next seat, hold those seats, and then spread that cost out among the rest of the passengers through higher ticket prices. If the blocked seats are not being used by a fat person, release them to revenue standby or non-rev pax. If a pilot is assigned a deadhead next to someone taking up half of their seat, just get off, call scheduling, and tell them to try again. I agree that people should pay for the space that they occupy and that others shouldn’t be inconvenienced because someone else spills over into theirs, but that isn’t PC.

Couldn’t agree more. I should have specified if forced due to regulations or social pressure prohibiting discrimination against the undisciplined. If you take up two seats you should pay for both, just as those who take up one seat should expect to use all of it, but we live in a world where something as unhealthy as obesity is not only normalized, it’s celebrated.

Well yeah, but the obese population now makes up so much of the general population that, well, good luck with that. Doesn't matter if it's the left or right side of the aisle, literally, both are obese and both think it's "fat shaming" the moment you bring up living healthy and not being obese. We basically have set up ourselves for this with our city designs, letting businesses convince us that the most important things are to go to college, start a family and have kids, buy a house, etc., there's no time for healthy lifestyle or open natural areas you can get to just to stretch your legs. It's all about consumption, riding texas-wheelchairs (side-by-sides), e-bikes, short-cuts, making life so easy that you just get fat...

But then again, just let them go, Darwinism sort it out, etc.....

Fat-shaming is inappropriate, but maybe society should stop coddling and enabling those who are living unhealthy lifestyles. Obesity related illnesses are the leading cause of death among black females and they’re being glamorized and encouraged to live a life that will kill them prematurely.
