Default Special Assignments / Project Positions

Just wondering if anyone can contribute info about the availability for special project and assignment positions for first officers and captains at the big 4. I know that at AA there aren't any at the chief pilot's office, but perhaps there maybe some in the training center and company HQ? With the new contract FO's can finally be instructor pilots in the training center.

How about at United, Delta, and Southwest?

If you’re not interested in flying don’t be a pilot anymore.

Theres a lot at United, chief pilot office often have two people on special assignment. If you live in Chicago there are even more, such as Line Operations downtown (they update jepp company info, bulletins etc etc), there’s people working on ASAPs etc. Tons of stuff you’d never think of. Of course training center stuff in Denver.

the big thing with special assignment is you have to apply and then keep asking till something sticks then network network network. It’s a great gig if you need to be home or you want to diversify yourself, setup for LCP or Flight Manager etc etc. I enjoyed it when I did it but I missed the flying that I was happy to get back. Great experience though, would recommend

not true at all. Many opportunities to diversify yourself in the event of an industry downturn. You can learn to instruct, interview, manage, learn to improve safety, public speaking and much more right from your own airline. I especially encourage guys with no military experience to apply to become more well rounded. Not saying military guys shouldn’t apply, just saying they are usually already well rounded. (I’m not a military guy)

Special assignments and the projects you work on do not matter. In a downturn, all pilots get furloughed in seniority order. Your projects or CPO connections cannot save you.

Youre either with us or against us. If you want to be in management go ahead and resign the seniority number.

No, but it adds to and diversifies your resume to make it stand out in the stack of the thousands of other resumes from furloughed pilots. It may not save your current job, but the few jobs may be remaining out there will still be interviewing and hiring the strongest resumes from the stack.

Ignore these two clowns competing for most doom and gloom stereotypical APC troll.

DL not long ago was advertising an Airbus technical position for FO's. Also the assistant chief pilots are all FO's and guys with a year in the company can also volunteer to be new hire mentors. Actually seems like a lot of the special project opportunities go out to FO's so if it's something you wanna do you can basically do anything after a short time on property.

Lol. Chill, man. Some people want a break from the normal grind or want to see their kids more or whatever. Flying a desk for a little while doesn't make someone anti-union.

Funny... I heard the same statement somewhere earlier this month. Was it in NH or FL?
