That is true, and for some reason in this day and age the forces of law and order don't always appreciate the "de minimis" principle.

Best policy, but surprisingly hard for most of us to apply in practice.

The cops are trying to do one of two things...

1) If you did it, they want evidence. They're almost certainly better at eliciting verbal evidence than you are at lying.

2) Even if you didn't do it, they may still try to fit you up for it if you make it easy for them. Repeating the same story multiple times with slight variations will destroy your credibility when they show it to a jury. Memory is funny, and they can lead you into slight discrepancies.

the “Burried treasure” story from 2005.
A group of men who made national headlines by claiming they found a buried treasure worth up to $125,000 was charged Friday with stealing the collection of old currency from a barn where they were working.

seems they decided to make the rounds on all news shows and a cop noticed their story changed every time they told it.
