Or too big now to be pushed through without major backlash.

This might very well be the play for F9 and Avelo. It could be a win-win strategy. Either the government shells out the money and other ULCCs get a government cash infusion, or it shuts the door on the entire idea to all airlines putting the final nail in Spirt’s coffin - eliminating a major competitor for Frontier and Avelo.

Let me get some of that gas money too. Otherwise I'd need to sell my guns to buy gas. And when the Chinese or Russians invade I wouldn't be able to defend America. I'm essential for national security.

If the deal is the government can get first dibs on the money to recoup their investment I am okay with it. I blame the creditors just as much as the government for the situation that Spirit is in.
Problem with that is there are supposed to be winners and losers with capitalism.

Saving the “entire industry” is something other than capitalism.

According to this the U.S. Treasury says they got all their money back from GM. I think Chrysler filed for bankruptcy at the time though. A quick Google search says that $70B was paid back out of $79B. I'm not sure I'd call that "no payback."
