Question Pilot pay scale interpretation

When a FO who has been with an airline for say 5 years, upgrades to captain, does that person start at 5 year captain pay or 1 year captain pay.

I was just curious because the Continental pay scale says that a first year captain makes $30 per hour.. just didn't seem right to me. In that case, he would be taking a pay in the transition from FO to CA.

The pay rates at CAL and most airlines are based on line seniority regardless of the status (Capt./FO) they occupy. Years of service are years of service, after 12 years in the case of CAL, all you need to look at is the Status and Fleet.

I'll have to look at the contract, but I think the $30/hr Capt. reflects a contractual first year pay without reference to status. As you might guess, there are no 1st year Capt's so it not really relevant.

If a 5 year F/O upgrades to Captain, then he gets 5th year Captain pay. A brand new airline might have 1st year Captains, but that would be the only case.
