In my opinion short call is not a big deal. They have to give you a min of 10 hours notice to report. Add the unofficial 2 hour call out and it is effectively the same as a trip assignment. I've never been notified less than 18 hours.

This is not to say that there is not problems with the current reserve system. You'll have plenty of time to hash through that when you on the line.[/QUOTE]

This statement is incorrect about short call. Here is the verbage from the contract:

b. must be promptly available for contact by Crew Scheduling during his short call period until the earlier of:
1) the end of the short call period, or
2) his departure to report for an awarded/assigned rotation.

promptly available has a precedence set at 2-3 hours or based on traffic. Now in the international categories people game the system since they know when all the departures are gone, however if crew scheduling calls you, while on short call, at 0900 and tells you that you have a 1200 report then you had better be able to make it.

the 24 hour international short call is what is keeping a lot of more senior guys off the equipment in NYC. That and Lagosl, Nigeria.

Just so I understand..

Say you are sitting long call. 24 hour phone availability. The crew scheduling calls you to inform of a short call assignment starting in min. 10 hours from now:

1. Do they ever give you more time (more than 10 hours)? Do you even know your short call days in advance?
2. How is the notification done - phone call?

Basically in order to sit long call at home you have to be able to arrive to your base within 10 hours, it that correct?

You misunderstood my statement and I for one do not game the system, I have a crashpad. My second sentence should have added " to short call duty".

Example: I'm at home (not anywhere near NYC) and I am assigned short call. The start of short call can't be any sooner than 10 hours. I've got 10 hours to be promptly available. Ten hours later they all me for a trip, I've got approx. 2-3 hours to report hence it is about the same as being assigned a trip on long call. I've seen a few call outs in the middle of the night and early and have been flying intl. out of NYC since 1999

That I agree with. The assignment of short call itself is 10 hours with the first two you don't have to be contactable if you inform crew scheduling.

1. I have never been assigned SC at 10 hours, usually 18-24.

2. They put it on you're schedule and I check it from time to time via internet/DBMS or VRU (voice response unit). They will call you if it's short notice or you don't acknowledge the schedule change.

You have to be able to sign-in in 12 hours. You can notify crew scheds that you will be commuting during the 10-12 hour range when assigned short call. If you are assigned a trip they won't expect you to be there until approx. 12 hours.

FWIW, I got assigned short call at exactly 10 hrs a few weeks ago. I then was called about 10 hrs later for a call out. This rarely happens, but if they need to they will do it.

No, you have nothing to swap. Open time pick-up for regular line only.
