Default New APA resolution may reduce back dues

This is great news for returning furloughees who were never members. Flifast, NoWake, LTD, looks like our efforst are beginning to bear fruit.

R2007-42 Rev. 1, “Membership Drive Initiative,” which acknowledges that “many of the furloughed pilots and their families are now returning from furlough in poor financial health only to face large bills for back dues and penalties should they desire to return to unionism.” Accordingly, this resolution reduces the monthly back-payment requirement for first officers from $50 to $25."

This is an idea put forth and advanced by a former TWA pilot. It doesn't reduce the back dues, it only stretches out the payments.

That's correct. Does it matter who put forth the idea? I was always a big believer in getting some momentum on at least any relief. And this idea had a lot of backup from plenty of natives. While we would love to see back dues forgiven, ain't gonna happen - not here, or ALPA, or anywhere. Too many folks with different issues and politics involved. This at least is alittle easier on the wallet for those who will join.

Along with proposing LOS, this is a step in the right direction.

Won't argue with that.

and curious

Can someone explain this ... if they were NEVER members how is there any back dues ? Why would someone pay dues to something that they never joined ?

Does APA want dues for furlough time ? That makes no sense ... on what income would that be based ?

Later, Brown CC

CC,
They are asking for, at a minimum, back dues from the date that agency shop was voted in, which I believe was July 1, 2003. If you want to be a member in good standing, it's back to 2002. There is no charge for time on furlough. Lots of emotions here and a few different sides to the issue.

CC,

To add to what LTD said, the reason back dues are required is because of the agency fee, which was instituted due to the increasing number of folks who either resigned from APA or who wouldn't join. I believe ALPA has the same deal.

What a lot of AA pilots were proposing was a "dues amnesty" which would encourage a lot of folks " on the fence" to join when recalled. Only thing is, APA's constitution and bylaws don't allow that from happening. Whether they can be changed/waived is beyond me, but there are too many folks with too many different issues to even make a "dues amnesty" close to fair for everyone involved.

To reiterate what I've been saying all along, APA does not differentiate between a furloughed pilots' background or previous airline - they are ALL furloughed AA pilots and APA will fight, as always, for LOS with this new contract. And now we have this resolution, which will hopefully also help in the unity ramp-up.

According to another source, the constitution has been amended 23 times since 2000.

Amnesty would go a lot farther toward creating unity than cutting the minimum repayment each month in half. This looks like just another PR ploy, even though started by an ex-TWA captain, by the APA to make themselves feel better.
