SWA April Classes

So these Capt's who gave many years to the company have to start all over as 1st yr FO's?! There must be some financially strapped pilots out there, especially for a company that didn't get nuked by 9-11. This industry never ceases to amaze me.

From: 18%er but I’ll enforce UPA23 to the last period.
Methinks it is more like 30 or so guys that need a hobby!

Just to confirm what has already been posted. PD told me today that 3 classes of 24 each in April are confirmed--2, 9, and 23 Apr. First class is planned for 24 60+ guys who were welcomed back. The other two are slated for poolies.
Biggest challenge is that given the short suspense, PD is scrambling to get the old guys ready (drug testing, medicals, etc.) for the 2 April class. Some may not be available in time. PD is still figuring out a plan if they can't get all the 60+ guys done in one class.
I was told that PD is hoping to start calling poolies to confirm class dates sometime next week. Good luck to all.

Didn't they have to have a First Class Medical to apply?
Keep in mind that not all of the guys worked for Southwest for 25 + years and those that did weren't always making 250K a year. Some are retired military that only worked there for 10-15 years. Others are probably just bored and the rest have 3 or 4 ex's to pay alimony to.

I would think they did. I'm not really sure what the issues were. I would imagine it is a bit more involved for these guys since they are breaking new ground flying 121 ops over age 60. All I know is PD was still trying to get everyone lined up for the 2 April class--well w/in their 4 week timeline. They are already under that for the 9 Apr class as well.

If you haven't heard, calls are going out for April class. I was called today but decided to stay where I am and passed on the offer. I had deferred the February class so that's it for me. They allow you to defer one class and then the next time they call, you except or get flushed from the pool. It wasn't an easy decision and time will tell if it was a good one or not. Best of luck to the remaining poolies and the last guy called for class can thank me later.

Folks,
Got the phone call today. I'm in the 9 April class....pool date of 25 May. Long time in coming. PD said they are taking 24 in this class and 24 more on 23 Apr.
For those of you who are deferring, my sincere best wishes to you on your future flying endeavors. To those still waiting, hang in there!

SamFox, congratulations and welcome aboard! Did they mention if there were any former SWA Capt's in your class or were they all accommodated in the April 2 class?
Update: Just received a call from the People Dept. and was told that the 02APR08 class will be 15 returning pilots only. The next two classes are to be 24 poolies each.
