Sometimes I wished I was hired then furloughed so I could run my side business. Other times I am greatful I got to do six more years at the regionals. Two sides to every equation I guess.

When I got called by TK in Feb to schedule my return to UAL (on mil leave), I was told that the last two newhire classes - latter May and early June were being looked at to be cut. It was my understanding that they hadn't offered anyone those classes yet, so it wouldn't have cancelled anyone scheduled for training.
This is likely why they stopped interviewing. I would expect anyone who's interviewed to attend class. Plan on Airbus only newhire classes.

Wonder what the impact of retiring 45 aircraft will have on DAL's plans as well... and will some of those in training be sent home by both carriers?

Good luck to all who had great expectations.

captjns, this will not stop scheduled classes at United to be cancelled. They're still way short on pilots.

For those that have later class dates with United, be prepared to accept an earlier class date at a moment's notice. There will likely be some who decide to turn down a class date at United. When I say a moment's notice, I'm talking a single day's notice.

I would THINK UAL management kinda had a plan like this for a bit. They just didn't come up with "let's park 15-20 A/C" on Sunday night (could be wrong).
Weren't they talking 50 A/C last year?
So I would hope they planned this a little ahead. The 65 age didn't help.
So...?

P.S. Ain't nutin wrong wit da bus. Roomier, and more comfortable for the trans-cons!!!

EMBPLT,

I interviewed in mid Feb and have an April class date. Are you just currious about the wait time or are you also starting soon?

I Posted this back in Nov 8 2007, when they issued this press release and suggested they might back flow some of the furlough guys to express carriers (i.e. mesa) and got flamed and warned for it, but here's the press release where they've been planning this airplane parking ordeal for awhile now.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - United Airlines, Inc. could ground 100 planes if fuel prices go so high that the flagship carrier of UAL Corp. needs to further trim its growth, said its chief financial officer late Wednesday.

Speaking to investors at an investment banking conference, UAL Chief Financial Officer Frederic "Jake" Brace said the Chicago carrier and its rivals have two major ways to deal with crude-oil prices approaching $100 a barrel:

"Either the industry passes on higher fuel prices or we're going to have to lower capacity," he said in the presentation, which was Web cast.

"We have a lot of flexibility in our fleet," he said, adding the carrier has more than 100 aircraft that it could ground or sell if oil prices get too high. It also has 13 narrow-body planes it plans to take out of service next year.

As far as fares, he said the industry "has done a pretty good job of raising fares, it will need to do a better job at raising fares to offset the price," of fuel.

Like other major carriers, United Airlines has been reining back its domestic flight offerings to make sure more seats are filled when it puts a plane in the air. Those cuts to capacity, which have been echoed by other large carriers, have helped it raise fares, a key element to the airline industry's nascent recovery.

In the third quarter, United Airlines said its traffic fell 0.3% but it cut its capacity even further, by 1.5%, driving up its load factor - or percent of seats filled. Its yields, or average fares, surged over 8%."

**** So to answer your question, they announced this in Nov 2007, so yes they have a plan, and you can see per the press release and quote from Nov 2007, it's not limited to just 15-20 airplanes.....good luck to those of you who are new-hires!!!! *****

Hey, thanks for re-posting that. Kind of, sort of, proves my theory. It says in that article "It also has 13 narrow-body planes it plans to take out of service next year".
BUT, 100 A/C?!!!
We'll see. Hopefully EVERYONE will raise ticket prices!!!
