No, AND if there is a relief crew onboard they are counted as J/Sers so you will be out of luck.

I jumpseat out of FRA to SFO and LAX often, and have never had a problem getting on (777 or 747-400). And there is always a relief pilot on these flights.

FWIW.

I jumpseated on United in March from SFO-SYD with no problems. The agents were very helpful and the crews were exceptional hosts. The agent who listed me for the jumpseat said the policy reads that they take as many jumpseaters as there are physical cockpit seats, but that a relief crew occupying the jumpseat does NOT make that seat "unavailable". She said her interpretation of this was unlimited jumpseaters because a cockpit jumpseat occupied by a relief crew member is never unavailable. Individual results will probably vary by the agent, the bag of chocolates definitely helped.

Yes I too was thinking about taking a trip to SYD and wondering how to get there. Friedly, did they let you sit in 1st or coach only?

I was lucky enough to be seated in business class both ways. United refers to off-line jumpseaters as "OCM's" and I do not believe they are allowed to be seated in the first class cabin. I think the gate agents play a large roll in your overall experience, although both captains did ask if I was given "good seats" when I introduced myself. Leaving SYD was a little more complicated, I arrived 4 hours prior to the flight and the gate agents were helpful but not as familiar with the procedures. A very nice agent named Mel was able to help me and charged the international taxes (~120AUD) to my credit card. You have to wait to clear security until they confirm that they might have space to accommodate you. Clearing security with just a jumpseat pass required some sweet talking, I was given a seat about 10 minutes before the door closed.

I use UAL to get back from OZ a couple of times each year. Unfortunately Air Canada used to run the ops and they were fantastic. They would put as many JS'ers as they could. Now UAL has a nazi for a station manager and she will only put one JS'er on per flight, regardless of how many seats there are open.

You won't get anything better than business as that's UAL policy.

As has already been mentioned, the check-in girls are the key. Be polite to them and you stand a much better chance of everything being ok. You shouldn't have any problem getting through security as they will issue you a departure management card.

Oh and its OMC (UAL lingo for jumpseater) not OCM

Always good to have a Zed on QF as a backup.

Basically, not unlimited and must have a seat in back. Relief pilot jumpseats are "available" even if occupied.

Unless it has changed it's OMC - Observer Member of Crew.
