Default AMR to retire 40-45 mainline aircraft

I am really surprised this has not been posted yet. American announced today it is cutting capacity 11-12% starting in the 4th quarter. That means 40-45 mainline aircraft will be retired (mostly MD-80's and a few A-300's) and 35-40 regional aircraft will be parked.

I guess the two major questions are how many will American be furloughing come the 4th quarter (they can't be 400+ pilots short right now).

Also, with DAL/NWA merging to form a stronger company, and United/US Air in advanced merger talks, how will American compete against these soon to be stronger carriers.
