Default New Tax Rules

Has anybody heard of the new tax rule this year that states we cannot get the standard deduction for overnights. Up to this point each city had a specific writeoff amount for lodging and incidentals. I guess the law states now that if your company policy or your contract has any language in it that the company will provide lodging on overnights, you no longer can claim these deductions. This is killing my tax refund.

Default taxes

Darby....

The deductions you get are for meals and incidentals...the rates vary by city. I use prodiem; they determine what my allowable deductions are based on where I was throughout the year.

Hope this helps...

Look in Pub 634(I think?). There is a standard allowance for air transportation workers. It went up this year.Again don't quote me on this but I believe it was around $43/24hr for the first half of the year and then went up to around $50/24 hr duty time. This is for domestic. If you travel overseas then the amount is higher. Hope this helps.
