Thumbs down United to shed 7000 jobs by 2009

You know we always talk about how hard it is going to be to find other flying jobs with many pilots on the street through this mess. Before you know it, finding a non-flying job is going to be tough as there will be so many pilots on the street throughout this next year competing for them.

Good Luck everyone!

Subject to change lets hope the oil slide continues and the new revenue being generated from higher priced seats helps these guys keep their jobs.

Better yet, let's hope the criminals they have running the place are ousted.

I'm guessing a lot of these guys getting furloughed/laid off (probably not the first time) will get out of the industry all together.

A handful of people I know at the Majors say they are going to hang it up. A few of them simply because their families can't take the uncertainty of it all.

Ain't that the truth! I've got a friend who finally got recalled to USAir (East). He had been doing well in real estate during the 5 year furlough. After a few months of flying around the A-120 he has asked for and received a 3 year LOA. Basically, he can make much more money building and selling homes with much more control over his schedule than he can flying. I doubt he'll ever go back. Perhaps when he can be captian but that's it.

Most of the jobs you are talking about are world HQ clerical, communication ect. jobs....they are not all pilot positions. No increase in the previous numbers...as far as pilots go.....looks like setting up for a merger. Remember DAL did the same type of thing while they are in the merger works with Nwa.

If merging is what UAL has in mind...smarter to cut before you merge.

Man, if Jet fuel goes from the 4$+/g to the 3$ range, mgt will drop the ticket prices 40% just to maintain market share.

Yes, I know we lose money on every pax we fly, but we make it up on volume

Jet fuel averaged 80 percent more than a year earlier, outpacing fare increases and new fees.
hmmm, I wonder who's fault is that??

Agree.

Both companies are right-sizing for the upcoming merger.
