Captains at CAL can fly in the right seat.

Two captains may not be put together for a revenue trip unless the captain in the right seat has been trained in the right seat—in addition to initial, transition, and upgrade training provided for that type aircraft. ("...maintain proficiency in each type aircraft and crewmember position...")

It's a fine point, but I don't believe you have to do ALL of recurrent in the right seat—contract aside. You merely, as a captain, have to be proficient in running things from the right seat (e.g. not climbing the sidewall while the other guy taxis).

CAL CA's can fly in the right seat without any training or recurrent training. They kinda get training because in initial upgrade training when your training partner is flying left seat, you are flying right seat. It is assumed you are qualified as an FO, if you are qualified as a CA.

I'm not saying it's safe, I'm saying it being done. That's CAL.

I'd say that:
-management is stupid for understaffing again.
-the pilots picking up time for 150% are scum.
-the rest of the pilots are stupid for allowing management and the other pilots for doing the above.
I dont understand how a pilot picking up open time is scum. We do it all the time in this business. Its unfortunate that guys are being let go, but the operation must continue. I think this is a little ridiculous that you are calling your fellow pilots scum for picking up open time, are you paying his/her bills? I dont think so.

Any pilot picking up open time with empending furloughs is scum. Why can't you get that? Read some of your previous "poetry" as well. Why are you posting in the Majors forum?

I'm one of the 150 being furloughed and I take great offense to this comment! There are people being put on the street and the company is junior manning...that is poor! So Herk, go pick up your open time, pay your bills and enjoy being employed.

So you think it’s ok for you to make more money while your brothers and sisters working for the same company are being laid off? Wow, that bodes well for the CRM in your cockpit.

“So what are you doing this weekend?”
“Oh I don’t know; it’s my last day at work I guess I’ll be looking for another job, how about you?”
“I picked up this great Houston trip; let me show you the pairing…”

To maintain right seat qual, typically the only thing a Captain needs to do is a normal takeoff and landing as well as a V1 cut and single engine approach. This varies by whatever the FAA has granted for each airline but normally that is all that is required to maintain right seat qual. On a side note, I don't think its safe unless your an instructor or LCA that does a lot of right seat flying.
