The New DAL MEC

The New DAL MEC
I just got an email saying that "we" have a new MEC. To me it looks like the same faces; Moak, chairman; one of our 747-200 Captains, vice-chairman. What's the chance we start getting some young folks into those positions. I know we had one of our junior pilots run for vice-chair, but apparently he didn't make it.
In my opinion, the biggest problem with our union is that we as the individual pilot don't get to vote directly in the election of our MEC officers. It's all done in back room deals with smoke and mirrors.
It would be great to see an "FO" in front of the MEC Chairmans name for once.

I agree with you guys 100%. If we are expected to pay mandatory dues, assessments, and any other "fees" they deem necessary then why can't we have a say in the election process. Does this not just constitue "taxation without representation?" Didn't we fight a war over this stuff over 200 years ago? I'm forced to pay dues (protecion) whether I choose to be a member or not to a bunch of guys who meet in resorts in sunny places. Sounds kind of like the mob.
Look. These guys bill the union for the hours they don't fly with the co. Our dues pay these bills. Union types will typically bid the highest paying airplane, even if they are dead last on the list because they will rarely ever actually have to sit call or fly the bad trips. It all gets dropped for "union business" and billed back to us. Couple that with the fact we don't even get a say in our representation. I even get to elect my credit union officers. I neither know them nor do they have the potential to do as much for me. Seems absolutely ridiculous.

You do have a say in the election process, its through the LEC reps that are a result of direct election by the members of the base. So by virtue of who you elect in your LEC you do have input to the process...have you ever called your rep? You do not have to be a member of the union, but because it is a closed shop..you pay dues.
Unfortunately the only time most people get involved is during a strike vote. The majority of the reps I know, do fly the line, and as far as bidding the highest position...why not; if they do not fly as you contend, than another person gets to move up and fly the slot.

And if you believe that the process of selecting the MEC officers needs to change from what is currently in the ALPA C&BL, YOU can bring forth a resolution stating how you believe it should be done at the local council level.
The changes come from the bottom up and start at the local level.
