Who were the captains of the ferries that arrived in under three minutes to render aid?

The truth is most people want one "hero". Let the people have what they want. Get over it. Everyone who understands the operation of an airliner knows it was a CREW that made this flight a "successful failure."

I can speak for all of us, I think, when I say "thanks" to your dad. His story would be a nice thread here.

We DON'T want to get into a discussion of who the best quarterback of all time was. This entire board would be destroyed. ;)

And ONE of the captains' names was Vince Lombardi, which I thought was kinda neat. It was the ferry where all of the rescued passengers were doing calesthenics and short windsprints. :D

Anyone else see that tomorrow Sully will discuss on CBS why he thinks airlines in the future will not be able to hire the "best and the brightest"???

I can't wait for it. On top of being a national hero, he can clue in the public as to how our profession is being flushed down the toilet. This could be a wakeup call to the flying public (if CBS doesn't edit the heck out of it). I don't even want to think of the outcome of the hudson accident if that flight were outsourced to foreign labor.

John and Suzy Q Public have already had their fill with the 60 minutes interview. Katie jerked their tears, so tomorrow they wont really be paying attention to what Sully has to say.

I'm all for it, I think its great that he might actually let people know that their kids/grandkids may not be as fortunate as the people on 1549 were, but I get the distinct impression that public attention is already waning.

Back to the School House

They do not have a stickshaker as it is not necessary because they have a system that trims it to prevent it from stalling so if you trim it up when not having power the airplane itself will keep lowest possible flying speed until it hits the ground (or water). Not that the slowest flying speed is always the best glide speed but it takes away the problem of getting to slow and worrying about stalling when having to manuver to reach your landing spot.,

The system gives you more time to concentrate on calculating your landing spot......... .....the system is perfect for landing with no engines. I wonder if the media know this.

Say what ??

Excuse me but we're pulling you off the line and sending you back to the school house. You obviously slept through your first 7 days of initial aircraft systems and need to take your Systems Knowledge SKV again....tomorrow !!

I only spent 2 years on "the Bus" but forgot it had this sophisticated a system and I never knew it couldn't be stalled without power. How does it "keep lowest possible flying speed until it hits the ground (or water)" ?

G'Day Mate....where is my '320 Systems book ????

Man, people are tough on here. Give the Captain a break, he did a great job along with the crew. The media has to make money so they dramatize stories for maximum dollar. I did find it a little odd that they never mentioned the F.O. for quite awhile, but it is what it is. Can't blame the captain for what the media reports, its a business they are trying to make money off a story.

Sully also mentioned in the first person that "he" started the APU, and he turned on the continuous ignition, in addition to what we would consider his normal tasks of flying the plane and ATC. Gotta wonder if the FO was shell shocked.

Maybe, who knows yet? The other possibility was that while the FO was executing some procedure that may have been slightly drawn out, CA Sully simply exercised his systems knowledge and experience because we wanted those things on RIGHT AWAY.

I seem to remember someone mentioning the FO only had 35 hours in the airplane and while the Captain was flying and making radio calls, the FO was feverishly running through a restart checklist designed to be done at altitude where there would have been time to methodically do each step.

As for the Captain taking all the credit, I know he rebuffed earlier interview offers to make sure the entire crew could be included. And I cringed at every school girl question Couric asked him. Definitely an amateur interview designed to get ratings. I got more information from the Coldplay interview! (and enjoyed it more too...)

I was told that both engines rolled back but did not flame out and did not respond to movement of the thrust levers.

That's more than I was aware of. I finally got to watch the full 60 minutes piece. Sully mentioned starting the APU as well which I think most would do automatically when the first motor rolled back.

I can't wait to see the full reenactment of the event.

Regardless of how much they had or didn't have working, a great job by all.

I think you have to realize that the audience Katie Couric was looking at was not a bunch of trained airline pilots, but rather a public uneducated in the real cockpit working environment.
