I ran the numbers and yes, they can't hold A320 Captain. However, all the DTW or MSP DC9 Captains that would be displaced (bottom 30ish) can hold MD88 Captain in NYC. I know it's a move or a different commute but it is available.

Since the bids ran monthly...In theory, a block guy could bid December reserve and bid back to block for January. There was a risk with this if your block spot got filled and no one bid out the next month you just lost your block and are stuck on reserve. This is why most did not do it but it was possible.
This was assuming that block was a senior position. In Hawaii, the reserve was more senior than block.

No, I'm saying that people, assuming they have taken care of their displacement options, making voluntary, conscious decisions to bid AE's. Some are going to hope this first bid goes real junior (they often do), and get something they may not actually want, just because they are blinded by the fourth stripe, or the payrate, or something else. They make the choice of swinging for the pitch, IOW. If they get too hungry, and ask for more than they truly want, they shouldn't cry if they get it.
I keep telling myeself to be disciplined, and put down exactly what I want, with the appropriate qualifiers, and not get greedy enough to ask for what I might accidentally get. I also keep telling myself it's OK if a junior guy gets something I didn't actually want, even if it pays better, or comes with an extra stripe.
It's another version of "bid what you want, want what you bid". Make sense?

Maybe in the long-term, but the sheer volume of displacements (especially the ones from Mecca) will make commuters out of a huge number of people who wouldn't consider it normally. I understand your point that, eventually, the increased number of bases should reduce the number of commuters on a company-wide, percentage basis, but for the next few years, I think we'll see commuting increase dramatically.
I think a better commuter policy needs to be a priority, for the short-term at least.

It sucks to get bumped and I feel for all the FDAL/FNW Pilots who are getting bumped but this is nothing new. Do you think the senior DFW guys expected to get bumped? What about the senior ANC guys? For years flying has migrated to ATL and that was good for the ATL pilots at the expense of all the other guys. Now ATL is taking a hit - why is this worse than what happened to guys at MCO, PDX, CVG, DFW etc, etc?
Answer - It is not different. At least in ATL most of the senior guys can stick around if they decide to. The same can not be said for a lot of the above mentioned bases.
And last but not least - Flying will return to ATL. I agree that this bid is disproportionately affecting ATL - but this has been going on for years at DAL and every other airline. Dont worry - the south will rise again!

In DBMS under the slip request function there is an option to request to be first in line for short call. I think it's under the yellow slip area. There is no guarantee that you will get SC, but if you want to attempt to get all your SC assignments towards the first of the month, you can attempt it using this request. As far as helping your RAW score, getting a SC day and not getting used doesn't raise your raw score by much. It also won't raise it at all until you get a trip with credit in it so you could sit six days of SC without getting used and still have a RAW of 0. Once they use you for a trip with credit, those SC days will go into the RAW formula and it will be slightly higher due to those SC days.
