ATL - where the clearance "just keep your speed up until you get scared" was both given and complied with.

Default Just say "Roger"

ORD - where the taxi clearance used to be something like: "22L via Inner, Wedge, Outer, Branch, Cargo, Parallel, hold short of 27L (and don't even try to read it back)."

DTW was really rude to me the other day. I wanted to clarify the ramp frequency I needed to use. EXCUSE ME if I'm confused because you have 4 ground frequencies, 2 north ramp frequencies and I am not based there. Get over yourself!!!!

JFK are also terrible controllers. They might do a good job with the traffic and all that they have to deal with, but there is no reason why they have to be a-holes. I was taxiing for departure about a month ago, and ground told me to monitor his tower frequency. I was in the middle of before takeoff checks, and I wasn't really thinking about the controller, so when I flipped the switch I said "air shuttle is up with you." He was FURIOUS. He made me sit there for 15 minutes before releasing me. There was no one else on the frequency, it was dead. A-hole.

ORD and ATL are the coolest controllers. As long as you don't stop in Chicago, they could care less if you screw up. They are so nice about it, and they don't yell at you unless you do something really stupid. I really enjoy working with those folks up there. ATL are cool too. They are super controllers, they know what's up, and they do a great job. I think they are laid back too.

LGA are also great controllers. The last few times I have been up in there, they have been extreamly nice, courteous and laid back. They also run a good operation.

PIT - well, I just love them there. They are cool, laid back, and funny as all get out. I love flying into PIT just to talk to the controllers! haha!

That's because the PIT controllers have nothing to do all day anymore. That place is a ghost town compared to 10 years ago.

If there is one thing I've learned when dealing with ATC, it is to be as apologetic when you've made a mistake -- even if you didn't but ATC thinks that you did.

I admit, I've screwed some stuff up before, but ATC was cool about it because I wasn't a jerk on the radio.

I'm not going to be apologetic when I've done nothing wrong. I make mistakes just like the next man, but in this litigous society, 'I'm sorry' is best saved for the wife and kids. If a controller is going to violate you, he or she is going to violate you and there's very little you can do about it. It's that simple. I don't worry about that any place in the world except DFW.

I remember being yelled at several times in KBOS in the late 90's, each time on Ground. I was given the instruction, "Turn left on Kilo. On Kilo, give way to aircraft X." As far as I'm concerned, there is only one way to interpret that. Once on Kilo, give way to Aircraft X. Aircraft X, however, said something and the controller yelled at us. I repeated back EXACTLY what he said to us. He could spin it as he wished, but we did exactly what we were told to do. I try to clarify things as much as possible without getting yelled at, but honestly I could care less about being yelled at, put in the penalty box, made to wait, etc. At the end of the day all I care about is getting back to the house in one piece & violation free. I love my job as I'm certain most controllers do. Anyway, have a good one. Happy Holidays.

Tom
