I like how they get off the slide and stand under the wing (fuel tank). At least some FA's come over to get them away from the plane.

For those who are tempted to mock the actions of panicked passengers evacuating a jet, I would strongly suggest you read "The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - and Why". Amazon.com: The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - and Why: Amanda Ripley: Books It is eye opening, and potentially life saving.

The long and short of it is that people under stress do not behave in what would normally be considered a rational fashion. Under high levels of stress, higher brain functions are lost almost immediately and people revert to some very primal behaviors. One manifestation of this is a "gathering instinct" and it is well documented. (ex: Running into a burning house to retrieve a set of keys).

In short, mocking people who behave oddly in these high stress situations is actually rather ignorant. It's kind of like mocking the mentally ill.

Mr. Deltabound, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

You were obviously under a great deal of stress when you wrote this post. The thread thanks you for illustrating the point so thoroughly.

I couldn't tell if the guy with his briefcase was the last out. If not then I'm sure he could be reprimanded for blocking an escape route.

You are correct sir stupid arguments do cause me a great deal of stress. He's arguing we should give this guy a pass because he was under stress and did not know what he was doing. Clearly this guy was just a self centered douche who endangered the lives of his fellow passengers because his briefcase was just too important to leave behind. I'm pretty sure the F/A's were pretty clear in their instructions as evidenced by everyone else leaving their stuff behind.

If you look at the video closely, you will see that many women had their purses with them, and at least two men took their bag or briefcase. So the guy with briefcase was not the only one who could not bear to part with his stuff. After he finally got his butt off the slide, a firefighter runs over and at least another person came down the slide. The firefighter then signaled some more, but there did not appear to be anybody else.

I am not defending the guy with the briefcase, but I do know a little something about human behavior when the person is placed in a stressful situation and especially one with which he is unfamiliar, and probably never experienced before. It is not everyday that passengers evacuate from a plane through the slide. It is very difficult to tell how different people react to different stressors.

This man appeared to be one of the last people out of that plane. Assuming that he was second to the last, it is possible that he thought he could take his briefcase and not cause any delay to anyone else. And he must have seen that others were taking stuff with them. Note also that the last guy to come out waitied until the firefighter got there and signalled him before he, too, jumped out. Of course, he would not have known that his briefcase would break open when it hit the ground.
