Northwest slips a notch
Northwest's reorganization into a smaller airline has it dropping one spot among carriers to become the nation's fifth-largest, based on the number of miles it carries paying passengers. The new order:
1. American
2. United
3. Delta
4. Continental
5. Northwest
6. Southwest
These rankings don't include flights on carriers' commuter airlines.
At Detroit Metro Airport, Northwest operated on average 505 flights a day in May. That was 87, or 15%, fewer than a year ago. The average includes flights of its commuter carriers.
Nationwide in May, Northwest operated on average 1,246 flights a day, 200, or 14%, fewer than a year ago.
Northwest Airlines, Detroit Metro Airport's largest carrier, has lost its title as the nation's fourth-largest airline, reflecting the large number of planes and flights it has shed as it reorganizes.
The fewer flights mean more crowded seating for passengers and higher prices to destinations where Northwest has little competition. The cutbacks have caused low-cost carriers like Spirit and Air Tran to add destinations from Detroit Metro.
Continental Airlines moves into No. 4, based on the number of miles it carries paying passengers.
Northwest, which is sharply cutting costs after filing for bankruptcy protection last fall, hopes to emerge as a profitable airline, which could lead to growth, analysts said.
Northwest offers almost 90 fewer flights a day from Detroit Metro compared to this time last year.
In March, the airline also had 367 operating aircraft, 65 fewer planes than a year before.
Continental's move is the first change among the top five carriers since 2001 and the first not resulting from a merger since 1997, according to Bloomberg.
Continental is still taking deliveries of 737-800's, 777's, and 787's ( 787's in 2009).

I guess congratulations are in order... but for who?... CAL?... NWA? My vote is for the NWA pilots for sticking it out for the long run during the hard times.

What is your point captjns
Cut throat industry!! If you just got hired at CAL you would be happy that your airline was hiring and growing. Tip your hat to CAL, they are growing while still paying pilots "pretty" well (better than AA). They are NOT growing w/ 100 seat junk "stealing" NWA routes, paying BS wages w/out union representation!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAL is doing their own thing growing in Central/S.America/Europe.
My little bro just got out of the AF flying C-130 in Iraq/Afghanistan and got hired at CAL--he's happy to hear they are growing.
"My vote is for the NWA pilots for sticking it out for the long run during the hard times."
What the F does that mean? NWA pilots "sticking it out"--check out their pay/concessions--NWA/Delta pilots sticking it out would have been to strike.
Get off my bro's back.

Where do you get your info from??????
Hey Cargobob and Eric Stratton:
You both are showing your ignorance of the situations at NWA and DAL. I am a NWA pilot who has been on furlough for over 4 years now and I follow the events closely at NWA. First, we NEVER folded on scope. NWA pilots still have the BEST scope section of ANY legacy carrier in the industry. Doubt it? Go read our current TA and compare it to the rest of the industry. Still don't believe it?--I would be happy to show you how wrong you are on this issue.
Second, you may not be keeping up on current events, but NWA and Delta are BANKRUPT. You can't negotiate with management the way you used to prior to being in bankruptcy. It is really quite simple. Management backed us up againts a cliff. If we struck, we might as well have jumped off the cliff too. Liquidation or live to fight when the industry turns for the better were our only choices. Don't think for one second any of us are happy or glad about our current situation or the TA! And remember, there is not an airline on this PLANET that is not immune to the same fate as NWA, DELTA, UAL, US AIR, EAL, PAN AM...............CAL?

Very mature. You must have either very little experience in this industry or be a real jerk to fly with. Who knows when you'll be next to reduce your costs...
