I'd suggest that CO notified NOK before this got out into the Media Circus. I don't know that we know how far into the flight this happened. Logic suggest more than halfway (which you can argue if you want).

That said, once a determination was made, I would suggest the CO got hold of NOK right away knowing that this would become a news event.

My god!

Having personally flown with 2 of the 3 cockpit crew members, I watched with vested interest. The news coverage of this event is so totaly irresponsible they should all be shot.

i remember my first landing in the crj,, it was from the left seat! i guess the fo can upgrade to captain now that he can land the plane.

on a serious note my thoughts with the family. they probably found out watching the news. and with all the disinformation floating around i bet any family with a crewmember on board that plane thought it might be their family member. ridiculous.

yeah I agree watching the same, I guess they have more pilot correspondents who are giving more precise information about FO qualifications and handling the situation, and waiting for CAL to provide coverage at EWR then throwing unofficial info out

These 777 guys are certainly not wet-behind-the-ears student pilots. Years of experience. The media makes it sound like the FOs should be lucky to be there to watch the CAs and gain experience for the day when they get to sit in "the seat" themselves. We are all trained exactly the same way so this shouldn't even be an issue. A news story maybe but it's not like airlines put a captain and kids with floaties up there.

Senior captain though...#29 on the seniority list.

I agree. The retired captain was really good. Now the NTSB guy is good as well.

lol... the first time I flew an RJ, I landed it... but anyway... I think the media will never ever get it right... Somebody should really inform the media that the captain and FO take turns flying every other leg in a trip.

Thoughts and prayers are with the Captain and his family, blue skies and tailwinds.
