Well if they are in fact reading, they should all be ashamed of themselves. There are no such thing as journalists or news reporters anymore. Just glorified bloggers, editorialists, and entertainers. I have yet to find anyone that reports unbiased and well researched news anymore. It's all in the name of ratings and sales.

But not to take away from this awful situation, I'll step down off my soapbox.

Didn't this happen once to CAL before?? I seem to remember something about it, I think a domestic 757 where the FO had either a FA or private pilot pax assist w/ PNF duties.

Even if there wasn't a back up crew, the FO is capable of flying single pilot if necessary. There are high odds that this flight also had a few JS pilots that also could have helped out. Even if they don't know the aircraft, they know how to work the radios and read checklists.

For the media people that may be reading this, understand that the First Officer and Reserve Pilot onboard the airplane are fully trained and competent to fly and land the airplane safely. They meet the same standards as the Captain.

It is unfortunate that the Captain passed away inflight, but the flight will land safely, and the approach will be routine, just as they are every day.

If you need more information, please contact someone who knows about airline operations, not a private pilot.

About 3 years ago. The CA died of a heart-attack. He was on an OE trip, so the right seater was actually a check airman. He switched seats and had one of the PAX, a private pilot, come up and sit in the right seat and help out with radios, etc.

I don't think it was CAL but I remember it being a FA that had her private license.

Yeah, it did - Professional Pilot News: Continental pilot dies in-flight

RIP - Blue skies amigo......

No, unfortunantly, they aren't. But remember, the media live but two rules...

1.) NEVER let the facts get in the way of a good story

2.) If it bleeds, it leads

To be fair, I am watching Fox and they are being very careful how they are reporting this. They are actually being very positive and pilot friendly on how this could have possibly happened and how it is being handled.

To be honest, I am happy with the way it has been presented. I think our industry needs to work on how it is disseminated though.
