5 years ago friends of mine in the auto industry were saying GM was going down. Others said no way. Too big. Remember Bethlehem steel? Now look, GM in BK and if Obama didn't save them, there would be no more GM. Even still, Pontiac Gone; Saturn Gone; Oldsmobile Gone; Saab Gone; Hummer Gone ... (Okay sold in some cases) but the fact is that UAL is going to get hurt badly.
Sure VA pays less... NOW. But what happens down the road?
Anyway, I am not happy about the way the aviation business has gone. Why would I be, I get paid to fly and today I get paid less to fly. But at the end of the day the world is flattening out and we all need to lookk for the best future not the best past.

Even though a 747 might only fly once, what is the utilization of the 747 on a flight to Sydney vs. the domestic aircraft?
Comparing VA and United or any other carrier is completely valid. They both transport people from point A to point B via airplanes. Some airlines just have points M through ZZ. Some may have TV, internet or food but they all do the same thing. They get people to where they want to go with and airplane.

i imagine even non-union companies have a contract to sign. i believe jetblue pilots all have an individual contract. with their supposed pay raise, they got one in the mail, signed it, and sent it back in. now they are waiting for the company to actually start paying on it. . . (i think this is right).
and the point is that maybe VA will raise its pay eventually (whether there is a "contract" or not).
