When you are on top, you get attacked. People envy you.
I'm not saying 'ol Chris was attacking SWA, but the mere fact that he mentioned Southwest is proof enough.

You know exactly why; because Southwest is at the top. It is the most financially stable of all of the airlines. The pilots have one of the best contracts in the industry.

A few years ago I'd have said Delta was asking for trouble poking AMR with a stick, but now I'm not so sure.
Arpey reminds me of Chamberlain in '38 proclaiming "Peace in our time" only to see Panzers steamroll across most of Europe a few months later.
If Crandall were still at AMR I'd say sit back and pop some popcorn, this is going to be fun but, Arpey appears to be timid and seems to have bought into the theory that an airline can shrink to profitability.
Who knows though, no one here thought AMR would pull a few billion out of a hat in a month either.AMR seems to keep a tight lid on their dealings, the world didn't know anything about the TWA thing until it was in the Washington Post.
Maybe AMR and CAL divvy up UAL? Maybe AMR and UAL divvy up Airways?
We'll know when we read about it.

There's no assets at LCC worth bidding on, much less the whole company with it's toxic employee war.
UAL's pacific routes are another story.
AA does need to do something to counter Delta, however. I'm not sure AA has a leadership team up to it.

It's called a t-square!
Of course you do not envy SWA, you are a 767 captain for Delta. Does it get much better than that? For many, that is as good as it gets. This does not apply to you. However, there are many others that do envy SWA and that was my point.

Concise and oh so true...
Let's also not forget that we're stuck in the same cage as this "pitbull", which is just as likely to turn on us as the opposition. Judging by traditional patterns, this particular beeeotch (referring to the female of the species, not the oldest profession) has been a fickle animal. It has mostly barked at the competition, with little effect. When it gets mauled after the briefest of fights, it tends to turn on us next.
In the end, this "pitbull" is more focused on our food bowl than anything else, and more dangerous to us than to anyone else...

If Delta as a airline does not solve their huge customer service issues then I don't see a bright long term future. Management to me seems focused on big deals and not enough on providing a decent product to the customer. If Delta does not improve customer service substantially then the long term future I would not put as bright. We should be a far better airline today then we are however management does not seem to care.

Agreed...Everyone (I do too) claim that ticket sales are ticket sales...but in reality what we offer in NY is horrific. I jumpseated home today on American and their Terminal is light years ahead of ours. We have a horrible terminal at JFK and at LGA (LGA might improve with the US Airways deal) I dont care what anyone says .....itis ugly, cramped and confusing. I cant believe Delta welcomes the world to NY the way we do. Again, ticket sales are ticket sales, but if after buying our tickets, passengers realize our terminal is horrible and they can fly the same route for the same price on American, i'm positive they will choose AA.
