Default United orders Rolls Royce powered Airbus A350

Interesting.....................

United Airlines selects Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines to power new fleet in $2 billion deal - Rolls-Royce

UAL is already a big Airbus/Rolls Royce operator but it's nice to see some airlines around the world ordering aircraft.

We are? What Rolls engines do we have? Unless I'm missing something, we don't presently have any Rolls Royce- except Tiltons limo

The IAE engines on the Airbii are made by a consortium of Pratt and Whitney and Rolls Royce.

You actually have hundreds in service today. Rolls Royce is a senior partner in IAE. UAL became the worlds largest operator of IAE V2500 powered A320's a few years ago. The V2500 is basically a 2 spool derivative of the Rolls Royce RB211.

For several years, Mark King of Rolls Royce was president of IAE but recently took a promotion at Rolls and is now in charge of Civil Aerospace.

The only US Major not operating Rolls Royce is SWA as Rolls has no engine for the 737.

So what does the Pratt and Whitney partnership bring to the IAE table? The fact that its a US company to ease concerns about buying foreign?

Rolls is the way to go... more power, sleeker look, overall an awesome powerplant. Those Pratts are just plain old bulky looking, especially on the 757s...

Really slow starters.

Welcome to the show. The 737 and lots of A320's are powered by CFM's which are made by GE and SNECMA of France, with the rest of the A320's powered by IAE. The MD-90 has IAE's as well and the 717 has BMW/Rolls. It's probably more about risk-sharing and lower development costs. Look at the way Boeing and Airbus have setup their latest aircraft programs.

Pratt does lag behind GE and Rolls in terms of market share in the civil turbofan business. That said, they're still a world class firm as is JAEC, MTU, and Fiat Avio of IAE.

The PW2000 series didn't make TBO and they lost market share to Rolls on the B757.
