Consider IF this thing had not become a big story what the outcome probably would have been.
My guess is a few weeks off & a letter.
So are we going to let ourselves be manipulated, like the FAA and NTSB allowed their agencies to be?

I agree that you can't rest on "loyal service", but you can look at their record. I also think you're being rather melodramatic with the "engines running out of fuel" business.
I am definitely in agreement with you that it is fair for them to be punished, and that we're not in the business of being apologists for pilot errors. We must stand for something as a group, and not tolerate gross deviations.
The questions isn't whether they should be punished, or not. Noone on this thread said they should get a free ride. The only pertinent question is whether the punishment is sufficient.
I think it is.

Personally, I think they were asleep and they concocted this ridiculous story about laptops. I just can't understand why. I don't believe FOR A SECOND, that two veteran pilots could become so engrossed in something that they completely ignore the task of flying.
I will never believe that they were not sleeping.

Hey superdad, greatest Delta pilot ever, mr. perfect, etc.etc,
I hope I get a chance to fly with you one day since your so freakin' perfect. An 88 B position, probably some young guy with a long way to go. Well let me tell you ace before you retire you're gonna step on it real good one day and I'll be right there to throw a huge brick through that little glass house you got your rear end perched in. Then again your own nickname , "superdad", should tell us all how big of an ego you have.

Not sayin I am perfect. I spent a long time representing pilots in disciplinary cases at my previous carrier. I have been through cases like this before. I just don't agree with those who always defend any pilot, believing that no action is terminable. I think that taking responsibility for you actions and placing responsibility on those responsible are very important and seriously lacking in our society. As a society we do not demand responsibility, just look at our politicians! That's just one example.
These guys f'ed up, REAL BAD, and I just don't have a lot of sympathy for their behavior. I think a year off is suitable, but I am surprised that this is not considered a terminable offense.

Let's let mgmt do mgmt's job and do discipline.
Learn from their mistakes, build a bridge, and get over it.

So, we put this crew on permanent Douglas duty until they retire, or quit. Problem solved.
That's why I get paid the big bucks.
