Default 1500hr / ATP for Part 121 rule passes

So, what happens to people currently flying around with less than 1500?

Last piece of legislation that I saw provided a 3 year compliance window.

What is a "House-Senate agreement" anyways? I think this is still a long ways away from being law.

Little early, they still need to vote it in.

It claims it should be voted on in the next couple of weeks.

"The Air Transport Association, the Washington trade group for major U.S. carriers, told House lawmakers in a letter before their vote that carriers were concerned the requirement would result in “unnecessary and artificial barriers” for qualified pilots and reduce the applicant pool for carriers."

Read that to mean CHEAP qualified pilots. If the price to hire comes up, there will be plenty of applicants, even with the (cheap) "pilot shortage".

I still don't see what this will prevent. As I understand it, the captain was flying that plane. He was the one that failed to recover from the stall. Obviously he had more than 1500 hours and the plane still crashed.

While I agree that airlines shouldn't be hiring pilots with 250 hours, I just don't think this will prevent anything. If anything it will prevent someone who is qualified form applying and being hired. Example, what if someone has 1,200 total and 250 of that is multi? Just an example but possible for someone to have this time. Do they not have enough experience for at least the regional level? I think that's at least worthy of an interview.

I think there should be more emphasis on the pilots background, and airlines' training programs. That's what I think the government should be more concerned about. After all, if you go threw a crappy training program, then more than likely you will perform that way. Also, I believe, at the regional level anyway, that some people are being allowed to slip threw the cracks rather then being let go when they should.

There is no replacement for experience, but I think this legislation is just putting a band aid on things. Just making people happy instead of addressing other, more direct, issues that contributed to this accident.

Exactly, the only pool it's going to reduce the size of, is the number of 250 hour college grads they can throw $16K/year at.

Peez, the spirit of this is more a reaction to the Colgan crash. Maybe it would have prevented it, maybe it wouldn't. I agree that back ground and past history should play a role, but lets be honest, the regionals just want you to be able to fog a mirror. This IS ultimately a stop in the right direction. I can hear the screams and crying at McKay and Doolittle from here.

By the way... try proof reading what you write.

I still believe if you don't qualify for an ATP you shouldn't be in an airline cockpit. Period.
