I submit that not only is the above statement NOT true, but that in 20 years we will still not have eliminated FE's.

Before we get unmanned airliners, we'll have to see airliners with only one pilot...and that's still way off.

Don't be seduced by UAV's in the military. Their current accident rates are significantly higher than manned aircraft. It's a long time before they meet civilian safety standards and requirements.

My brother was a program manager on the X-45 UCAV (stealth fighter without a pilot). It is not operational (yet). Airliners with or without passengers will never get to this point in our lifetime (or our kids). We are still getting 1960's cockpits from Boeing in new 737NG's! This is the 21st century, but even Buck Rogers flew his spacecraft. The technology may happen, but the customers won't go for it.

The Navy is looking into UAVs for the future as well. I pitty the pilot that has to sit at a desk to fly a plane!

I have one question that comes to mind for skyhigh. Why have you put 20 years into aviation and have never had a capt spot at any sort of air carrier. I think part of your problem with aviation is that you never stayed at one place long enough to get the right amount of experience. Skyhigh if you want me to believe that everybody except for 1 in 25 are doomed to fail in aviation then find me 10 current pilots that have worked in aviation for 20 years and not have made six figures or made it to the left seat of any scheduled carrier. And by the way if you would have stayed at horizon for 20 years you would be making 121 dollars an hour which is pretty good. Best of luck to you.

What a great way to end a post! Just simply go to the main website and look at 20 year Horizon capt. pay. Skyhigh preaches the tireless hours of never being home living in a third world country by yourself as what to expect out of the regionals. Had he been smart enough to stay put he would be making 6 digits, and thats on monthly guarantees alone, forget that he would be pretty darn close to tops on the seniority list and probably hold a ridiculous line that has him home more than half the month.

I think that most people getting into this field realize what they are getting into when it comes to the effort its going to take and the time away from home involved with moving up the ladder. But when you keep the big picture in mind and constantly aim as high as possible even if it doesnt work out as great as you could have imagined i see one hell of a life to look forward to. This career offers something that nothing else in this world does. You can take an infinite number of paths, but whats great is you get to choose it.

My gut tells me that if i can stay focused with the big picture in mind i will achieve everything i can imagine. Thats why this country is so great, if you are willing to put your heart and soul into something i truly feel you will be rewarded with your efforts.

Reality says there will be a bump in the road, a furlough here is not just possible it seems likely. But its where you go from there that defines you and your life.

Skyhigh could try and preach to me as many negative ideas as he has, and from being on here long enough the list is long and distinguised. I find his words to be somewhat encouraging, as though i will get great satisfaction in proving him wrong someday.

SKyHigh
I currently fly at my corporate job with copilots in King Airs and Citations that make over 40K and they are just starting out. If it's taking any pilot with career aspirations 10 years to make 40K/year, they're what we call "lazy." The most an enlisted person will make, at current rates, is 65K (an E-9 with 26 years). Retiring after 20 years and the most they'd make in retirement is 25K/year. Go ask any lawer or doctor how long it takes them to repay their student loans. MUCH longer than any pilot is paying for theirs. Of course, a small percentage of them hit the Holy Grail and rake in the bucks, but not many.

You'll make it - just have a good plan to cover the possibility you have to leave aviation. Don't put all your eggs in one basket - but you already know that....One more thing, keep your debt under control and live below your means...

...Hard work will always be noticed and rewarded.

The second thing to do is find a sugar momma. Marry a teacher or nurse. They will make another 40-50 grand themselves and combine your income and IM RICH!!
