Has pay at USA airlines fallen over the last few decades? I seem to remember senior Captains at the majors making well over $20k a month. I am a 15 year FO at my non US based airline, about to obtain my first command, and I earn more than most of the top scale widebody Captains at the USA majors. The senior Captains at my airline make well over $25,000 a month for 72 hard hours after which overtime, at 1.5 times the hourly rate, kicks in. Soft hours are 90 a month, but we always reach the hard hour threshold long before the 90 hour soft threshold.

South African Airways. I want to move my family to the USA but can't justify the massive drop in income if I join a USA airline. Commuting from the USA to South Africa would be a nightmare but at least my pay package, even after the top marginal tax rate in South Africa of 40% is deducted and my pension and other contributions have been deducted, would still leave me with around $10,000 a month in my pocket.
South African is a great airline with modern equipment, an excellent training department and a decent route structure, but I'm worried about my kids future in South Africa as well as the fact that there are only 3 million taxpayers supporting a population of 40 million, of which 16 million are on welfare. Corruption in the government is endemic and the ruling party is now trying to change the constitution. I'm worried about delaying a return to the USA for too long and then being too old to move if it becomes absolutely necessary as I am already 45 years old. I've waited almost 15 years for my command and starting over from the bottom, with the pay that has been indicated in the attachment to this thread, is really not an option.

We are well on our way to having a similar statistic here in the states...

No malaria where I live. I'm in Johannesburg. But I've worked all over Africa and fly to many malaria infested regions, as do many USA airline pilots, including Delta and United. I've always found that the pilots who contracted malaria were those who took anti-malaria pills. Makes you think...........
