I think you get paid but no per diem and are on your own for housing. That's the way it used to be anyway. Does it matter?

Default No matter what.

Having NW roots is another way of saying that you need a strong internal contact.

The fact is there just are not enough jobs to go around, period. There is room for hope but the odds are long. Many in the PNW place their entire faith in getting hired at Alaska. Fall short and your life is an open wound. Horizon Air is full of broken Alaska Airline dreams. Their days are longer, benefits much thinner and for less than half the pay.

If you still think you are the one and that providence will reach out and touch you in spite of the facts then by all means go ahead and take on massive debt and wasted years of training and experience building. You might make it and in any case Horizon, Pinnacle, Gojet and Skywest need to fill their ground schools with cheap accommodating pilot hopefuls ready to lay their lives down for a dream that is a long shot.

Default Simple Math

Alaska Airlines has around 1500 pilots. Assuming each pilot has a average of a 30 year career that means that they need to hire an average of 50 pilots a year to cover retirements. (assuming they don't grow or shrink)

Now that pilot group has 1500 pilots hammering the chief pilots office everyday with requests to hire their sons and daughters. They also have hundreds of guys petitioning to get their military buddies in the next class. Horizon Air is gifted a few seats on occasion. Add to that HR has their own pet projects of people they want to hire for various reasons. In the end there are few slots left for the no-name random resume to come through the door.

It has happened but it simply is not enough just to have just a full resume.

Don't bother applying. It probably wouldn't matter anyway.

Horizon pilots are part of the interview "quota." A few mil, a few regional, a few "under-represented" classes and a smidgen of corporate. I would say most need an "in" at the airline to make it happen.

I'm sure you'll get far in life with that kind of attitude.

Default Beat up AS?

I am not trying to beat up Alaska Airlines. I love that company. All I am saying is that is how the world works. The resume matters far less than who brings it to the chief pilots office.

Will it be a well liked check airman or the US Postal service? The odds are very Long indeed for everyone. Nearly impossible for the random pilot on the street.
