Coolest airports/approaches
#71
Shooting the arc into Bogota Colombia and one of the coolest things I've ever seen was on a night approach into Guatemala City. The volcano Aura was acting up and there was a perfect orange line of lava flowing down it's side. It was like approaching the land of the lost.

Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan. Surrounded on all sides by f-ing huge mountains.
You come in over the mountains and the controllers always keep you high until the last possible second. Also, you normally cannot hear them because of all the frequency jamming in Kabul. All you can hear are loud screeching noises on the radio.
Prior to the final approach fix, you have to descend at 3,000 fpm and if you are not careful, you will end up at the final approach fix on the false high glideslope. (Happens almost everytime)
There is also severe icing, low ceilings, poor visibility, ice fog, ice on the runway, etc.
Last year, we had a plane slide off the runway and the crew could not emergency ground egress because there are still land mines in the grass between the runway and taxiway left over from the Russians.
And, oh yeah, people shoot at you too.
Nice place.
