Default 747 weight restrictions SFO to SYD

So my brother was caught by surprise by a weight restriction trying to non rev back to SYD from SFO Last night. He makes the trip back and forth often enough that he's been asking me what sorts of things would cause them to weight restrict this flight so he can watch out in the future. I know it could have been destination weather (although it wasn't in this case, the weather in SYD is fine) or winds aloft or a heavy cargo load. Is there anyone with experience on this specific route that could give me a better idea of what goes on? Is this a frequent occurrence? They nearly pulled a few paying passengers and the flight left with 40 seats open. He's worried about getting screwed trying to make it back in time to go to work even though tonight's flight has 70 seats.

When I went back in March, the UA 74 was authorised to go with 309 pax and I was number 301 (and the last) to make it onboard.

Winds in the South Pacific have been a bit stronger than normal the past week or so...

They left with 60 seats open last night and again without my brother. I never thought they would restrict the 74 that much.

Do any UAL folks know if there's a way to look at a flight after it's departed and see who got on, if any paying passengers were bumped, or anything like that? I can do that on AA's non rev system but I never could find a way on UAL employee res.

Just look on United.com, flight status, standby list. It shows which standbys got on and what seat they are in. This info is available to the entire public, no password needed. United.com has a great deal of info under flight status.

Thank god this route is switching to a 777 soon! That should really help things out.

I'm sure if Jeff had his way, he'd find a way to put a 737 on it...that was pretty much Continental's m/o.
