I may be wrong, but I don't think it takes a degree to realize that waiting to get your degree, or waiting until the requirements change, is a money losing proposition. While you wait them out, how many years are you no longer able to earn $300k+?

A degree may cost $100k, but not having one could cost at least $1M+ in earnings. Don't be mad at your money.
And there are alternative ways to earn your degree for thousands less than that. CLEP, DSST, testing out. All fully accredited. CLEP Forum - CLEP Study - CLEP Testing - Study Guide and Strategies. Thomas Edison is one of the "big three" colleges that accepts multitudes of credit.

Default 737 NG type rating worth it?

I was looking to get the opinion of the new hires (especially military) on going to get a 737 NG type or possibly Airbus 320 rating to set myself apart. My targeted companies United, Delta, Southwest, and Fedex.

Is it worth it in today's hiring environment to use my benefits for the type to maybe get in sooner or just wait it out? If so 737NG or Airbus 320? Lastly recommendations, I'm currently looking at CPT (crew pilot training).

I agree, I'd still be at least 2 years away from doing my degree online part time if it wasn't for Excelsior college. I went from 12 classes required at my former school to only 5 classes required. I tested out of 4 classes with DSST, study.com, and UExcel Exams. Only had to take my capstone with them. Got it done in 5 months. They charge higher enrollment fees if you do it this way, but it was worth it.

How favorable do the majors (more specifically delta) look at volunteering? Say big brothers/sisters.... Could it determine if you get an interview?

I would not spend your money on a type rating.

Just keep flying and keep updating your application at lease monthly.

Your time will come. Good luck!

Depends, what's the rest of your resume look like?

Good (enough) GPA in a STEM major from a good (enough) school or basket weaving from ITT?

Masters degree?

Lower end of spectrum flight time or higher time FO that can't hold upgrade yet?

Company/Union volunteer or regular "clock puncher"?

Clean record or a blemish or 2?

You referenced DAL specifically. Read any DAL tread and you'll notice it's all subjective/relative with no "magic formula".

But it won't hurt, so put it on your app, where they want you to.

Volunteering isn't a magic bullet. It's simply part of the "whole person concept". If it determined if I had an interview I'd be hired 20 times over by now....

No, it's not worth it, don't do it. It won't set you apart.

No...it's not worth your time (or money). Apply to the majors...if that doesn't happen, go to the regionals until you get hired by the major of your choice. It will happen sooner than you expect. Good luck.

PS....some regionals now pay new hires more than several of the LCCs (no secret there).
