CAL hiring 80 per month.

Most jusnior CA is a 2000 hire. Most junior CA award 2001. No hiring 01-May 05. There should be a 2005 CA in the March Bid, providing no concrete merger plans..... Been there before.

Believe it or not I think there is some method to the madness as to why CAL is hiring such young, inexperienced pilots. First, while they are relatively inexperienced, they do have the skills necessary to fly for CAL. If you'll remember, back in the 70's, Majors were hiring people with 500 TT. It's all cyclicle and experience is relative. There is also a philosophy at CAL (this was told to me by a Chief Pilot) that it is easier to train someone that has only been at a regional for a short time, rather than someone who is set in their ways. I'm not sure I agree with this, but that is their perspective. This would also explain why so many of the higher time pilots that CAL hires come from a check-airman/training department background. CAL feels that a check-airman is more adaptable to new procedures and ideas.
The other reason that they are hiring people so young is to spread the age of the pilot group. Most "experienced" regional pilots probably fall in the age 28 to 34 bracket. CAL doen't want to have such a large portion of it's pilots (over 1,200 new hires so far in the last two years) be bunched so close together in age. This will create a problem in the future as those pilots reach retirement age.
As for the Captains at XJT that are upset with FO's being hired underneath them, I feel your pain. I was just as upset until I got the call at CAL. The fact of the matter is, that's life. A lot of people junior to me at XJT had also been hired at SWA, FedEx, and UAL (back in the day). You need to get over it and concentrate on making yourself marketable.

I would say that many pilots who are below average don't become apparent until they try to upgrade. Not everyone can be truly trained in lets see? -Logic and headwork. You either have it naturally or its obvious it is just mechanical.
Also giving the FO's that are qualified to go elsewhere a type rating has bitten CAL. I have flown with two former CAL pilots (and there are more) here at SWA. To be fair I am sure there are some former SWA folks at CAL.

While I will agree that CAL is looking pretty good now you forgot to mention another reason for hiring less experienced pilots. They won't up and leave when the next airline calls. No experience, no job interviews, no leaving. Once they do have the qualifications to go elsewhere they are captains. Makes no sense to leave then.

Our company is making lots of money and the sky is not falling as they alluded to during Contract '02 negotiations. I say we open early and get back what we stupidly gave-away plus 20%.
