Especially domestic - and at that most people "paying" for first bought a last-minute Y ticket for business and got the automatic upgrade; when I was flying for consulting business would do this a lot. Hardly anybody would actually buy domestic first class ticket per se, almost never makes sense.

Short version: cool of the day goes to the JetBlue and Delta pilots I interacted with yesterday while trying to commute home. Every one of them was awesome.

Longer version: I had a DH for the last leg of my trip, so decided to go straight home. Everything going home was offline, so I couldn't just switch the DH, and instead needed to JS. Little did I know that this route was a common with both JetBlue and Delta commuters headed to work. Three JB and three Delta pilots were all trying to get to work on the same JB 320 I was hoping for.

Bottom line is the JB 320 CA working our flight walked the gate area, shook hands with all of us and assured that his plane wouldn't leave with a single open seat if we weren't all on the airplane. The other JB pilots were great too, offering to take a FA jump, kept me up to speed with the standby situation, and so on. The backup options to this flight were a pair of Delta branded RJs leaving only 20 minutes later, and the Delta pilots gave me help with the standby situation there as well. It just seemed like everyone was interested in getting me home, which was cool.

Unfortunately the 320 filled up and the gate agent gave me the bad news that all jumpseats were occupied. Normally I'd wait around to see the door close, but with the RJs leaving so soon and me not being able to list online, I needed to hurry to those gates and get listed. Fortunately it wasn't too far - maybe 5 gates away. One of the Delta guys that didn't get on the 320 took the jump of the first RJ, so I headed over to where the second one was leaving. It was all boarded up, but the agent got me listed, and I even had a seat in the back. As I happily walked towards the jetbridge I heard a shout for my name, and turned to see one of the Delta guys from the JB 320 running towards me. He told me a seat opened up on that flight, and they wanted to make sure they weren't leaving me behind. I told them I was cool with the RJ (I figured that'd be one less guy on the 320 JS this way), and thanked him profusely for checking.

So tl:dr, it was yet another cool offline commuting story. But this went beyond that. The JB 320 was already running a little late, so I'm sure there was pressure to get it out. It's always a great thing when pilots look out for other pilots, but it's not like I was in the immediate boarding area - one of the Delta jumpseaters came a number of gates down the terminal to look for me. They weren't going to leave unless they knew one of my other options worked out.

So to the JetBlue and Delta pilots that were part of this, that was pretty effing awesome. Cool of the Day!

I can't speak for DL, as I can't JS on them, but as a FA with an agreement with JB....this is always SOP. Doesn't matter if you're a pilot, FA or any non-rev. They are unfreaking amazing! They will not leave with an open seat and are always willing to take a JS, (pilot or FA) to get other crew members on.

'Who wants pizza?': WestJet pilot buys food for stranded Air Canada passengers - Newfoundland & Labrador - CBC News


The Air Canada plane that had originated in Toronto couldn't land in St. John's on Feb. 8 due to bad weather and ended up landing in Fredericton.

Samms said passengers were told by an Air Canada employee at the airport at midnight that it wasn't possible to get food delivered.

"Out of nowhere, a WestJet pilot emerged and said, 'Hey ... I am from WestJet and we do things differently. Who wants pizza?'" Samms told CBC's St. John's Morning Show.

Debating to post this in "cool" or "tool," but since the Tool has derailed...

Kudos to this fantastic cool controller for saving this *****'s life (warning, this is beyond cringeworthy).

Wow, terrible CFI to send that student out there solo. Excellent work by the controller though, definitely cool-worthy.

Wow 5327J was my favorite plane while in flight training. Wierd to hear it in the video. At flights-inc centennial
