I think it is hilarious that all this "deep" talk is in the thread about Spirit pilots being low tier.

Lets talk about fuel calculations for diverting next.

It is quite funny...

Low tier pilots always pull open decent when there is a decent without restrictions. You get down, when you get down. You slow down, when you slow down.

One is how often I see someone descending using an autopilot mode that is resulting in engine power being added (V/S mode with a value selected that results in needed engine power, with the associated 'Speed' FMA), and at the same time using speed brakes.

This is no different than driving a car with one foot on the gas while wanting to slow down, and using the other foot to push the brake.

I'm not at all suggesting this is you, just noting that I see it often.

You know-

I've decided, for the most part, I don't really care what the new guy (girl) in the right seat chooses..... There's more than one way to skin a cat- and no better way to learn which fits when than to skin all the cats..... When the power comes up and speedbrakes are out.... The ECAM ding ALWAYS scares 'em..... (Fairly entertaining) and then they don't do that again.....

What I REALLY don't get is the climb from say, 300 to 350- "expedite...." Why not just OPEN or MANAGED and select .75 or .73 or whatever.... This thing where they spin the speed to .85 and use a high VS- ALWAYS gets ugly.... Decreasing A/S in the mid-high 30s.....

I've never seen that horrible technique.....

Well, I have with one guy. Liked to finger fukc the FCU and constant switch modes and adjust CI. Was horribly uncomfortable, lol

oh but they did. several carriers thrust idle open descended straight into the ground and killed people.

this is what happens when you have 2 yr upgrades. guys in the right seat just arent seeing different methods and techniques enough and then go to the left seat. if you are already a capt and you haven't seen someone do that then you weren't fo long enough.

YES!

It used to be funny getting an assigned speed and watching them try several CI's to make it happen instead of just pulling the darn knob. Now it's just mildly annoying.

So Mr. Moose,
Exactly how does that work?

I mean short of having the AP off, an altitude set above your current alt (or below terrain), AND not leveling off on your own - in which case the open des is the least of your problems.
