One consistent thing I’ve seen in this industry is a lack of perspective. You can see it at all levels, but it can be especially bad among those who’ve had a great gig for decades but are convinced otherwise. What’s heartening are those who hang onto their perspective despite this industry’s ups and downs.

Who currently in the industry has had it good for decades?

That about says it all. I can remember back in 1984… first day of line training. The captain pitches up and I take the lead by introducing myself. I asked for his name. He asked what does that say. I said “STEVE”… for example. Then he asked no.. the word above the name… CAPTAIN???? He said yep…. That’s my name. Needless to say that was the worst two weeks spent in that 2 day trip.

captjns,
Thankfully jack-wagons like that are pretty rare (although they can clump up on you from my experience and then you run another stretch of fantastic crews) but they do make for stories over your favorite beverage.

I can remember, when flying for a foreign carrier some 12 years conducting line training to a cadet. He mentioned that he got a call for training with his country’s legacy carrier. He remarked he will have a 3 day layover on a Caribbean Sea Island. I gave him advice, which I thought appropriate. I told him to fast forward when on the B777. It’s February with miserable cold and icy weather. His spouse is sick to her stomach, home bound with three toddlers, who are also sick to their stomachs. I recommended he stay in the shade if he ventured outside. I also told him the situation would not bode well if I came home with a sun baked tan with a smile from ear to ear.

I’ve said something similar before in this thread. The destination really doesn’t matter. The only time my wife sees the inside of a hotel room is on some version of vacation for her. So when I go on a trip and call her from my hotel in Cincinnati, she thinks I’m on vacation because I “get to stay in a hotel”. Been married 23 years and a working pilot that entire time. This mindset is not changing.

But as captjns points out, no reason to stoke that envy.

To quote the Honeymooners. “Here I am slaving away over a hot stove all day, while you have been down there in that nice cool sewer.”
