What does UAL wear to training, cutoff shorts and harley shirts? Delta just requires pants and a collard shirt.
How "informal" can you be in a cockpit, does everybody just wear gym shorts and surf the web inflight? Not sure about these arguments.
Lastly, I think you have misread Delta strategy. They have actually lost Billions over the last few years on worthless fuel hedges when oil came down and stayed down. AA hasn't hedged a bit, I'd say that AA called oil pretty darn spot on for the last few years, but they have instead spent mightily on new metal. Delta could have easily replaced it's 88 fleet with just one years hedge losses.
They operate the 88 and 717 generally because mgmt seems to have taken a page out of the SWA playbook and tried to take a more conservative approach to capital expenditures then the competition, hence the debt being much reduced since the merger. A lot of companies have been on a spending spree due to cheap financing and stronger demand.
I hope it works out for everyone.

The culture difference is very real. Bases were more important to me but I did evaluate the culture before deciding. You may not like their fuel or 88-717 decisions but they are out earning United to the tune of 100's of millions of dollars over the past 6 years.

-Everything changes.
-Have a backup to flying.
-Pick one airline. Dont look back. Enjoy.
-The rest is just noise. Contracts come and go. Aircraft orders come and go. Bases appear and disappear. The bottom line is, the transient CEO and board are the decision makers. If their decisions pad their wallets, they could care less about you and me. Have a back up always. Save $$$$ always. Have 1 year of cash handy.
Good Luck,

You can wear business casual to both airlines but you will be in a distinct minority at delta. You can expect a shirt and tie most days. Their training is done at headquarters with bigwigs running around and popping into training. They have completely different cultures that rears its head in the most unlikely places. From multiple jump seats and multiple sources they inspire the people who are tiring to fly with IMO. They have a lot of great people but every airline has them. Have you ever ended a 4 day and realized it was fun? The guy next to you was probably professional, easy going, and friendly. Calling ops for first class meals doesn't have to be a 10 seconds to midnight nuclear launch like some pilot types treat minor issues. Just look at the interview. A two day interview with psych eval, reflex testing, and pointless knowledge test that anyone can prepare for; all to hire the same people other airlines are selecting in an hour ordeal. The email to interview at United is 4 paragraphs and two hyperlinks and Delta's was almost 4 pages.

I'm a civilian who's been at Delta for 16 years. By and large I've enjoyed myself a great deal, and I've never seen anyone wear a tie in training. I've got no idea what UAL is like, but we have a great bunch of men and women working here. A few odd ducks, but every airline with 10000 plus pilots will have a few.

Please. I live in South Florida. Between the latino machismo with their near absolute total disregard for traffic laws, and the geriatrics simply waiting for God to call their number, on a GOOD day, I95 makes Mad Max look like a scene from Driving Miss Daisy.
And that's before the rain and the Canadians come down and cluster**** things up.

The only way to experience a stress free drive on I95 is to be a Latina in a >$40K SUV.
It must be a tranquil, zen-like experience driving mentally convincing themselves that not a single other car exists on the highway. While the rest of us are confined to a stressed out single crowded lane, they have two lanes reserved for texting at 40 mph and makeup at 85 mph along with singing to some band with too much cow bell.
