So back to the original question. How many jobs are involved in the cargo operations?

DAL is going to focus on underwind cargo not dedicated cargo fligh operations. Now that may change, but that is what are new VP of cargo is saying.

If it were just ANC it would be 82 premium wide body CA positions and
70 premium wide body FO positions and 88 premium wide body SO positions.

If you include MSP the number is larger.

Side note: ANC SO 747 is the most junior position at NW because we have separate lists for line holders and reserves.

Also, the SO position pays more than the DC9 FO, more than the A320 FO and more than the 757 FO. So its a nice entry level job.

This is what I believe they call merger synergy. Exec say one plus one equals three. Market says one plus one equal one and a half. Cargo has been a unique entity for over 60 years, especially in Asia, and complementary to pax and part of NWA having a special relationship with Japan, Korea, Taiwan and now China. Now we'll have some whiz kid from Buckhead strip cargo over short term analysis. Even more amazing, Delta pilots on this board seem to be gleeful. Those are your jobs , I'd be pretty upset to see some marketing pud kick them down the stairs.

Especially if New Delta is foolish enough to allow the cargo route authority to expire. We'll NEVER get them back and 10 years from now, the young puds will be off to their next excellent adventure and the rest of us will have to live with their mistake.

Kingbird,
I agree 100% that they are our jobs going away, but I am raising the BS flag about any DAL pilots being gleeful. Any reduction in pilot jobs at the new combined company is bad for all of us. Hell, I wish the DC-9's would stick around for 15 more years but I just don't think its realistic. I think a more accurate feeling is that with the 787 getting delayed so long we want to make sure the arbitrators have an accurate picture of any reductions in either sides fleet. As a matter of fact the transcripts for the first two days mirror the arguments we were having on these boards three months ago - NW's fleet shrinking and DAL's fleet growing modestly, but nontheless growing. In the interest of fairness it has been DAL's turn so far and I'm sure the NW sharks will make a similar case for their side when they are up to bat.

This tit for tat is really not very meaningful, but for argument's sake, Delta routes growing healthily, profits shrinking smartly. NWA fleet shrinking significantly, profits still substantial. Why are we doing all this sideline stuff?, we are all going to be Delta pilots very soon. I'm not particularly anxious about my stake in the seniority fight, it's sort of like someone still trying to explain to me how people that paid no taxes, got tax rebates. I just don't get it anymore.

Actually the interesting part is that several of our takeoff and landing slots at NRT are tied to our freight operation. I am curious how the new boneheads and beancounters plan on keeping those slots, since they are all slots to the A Runway (long runway). The only planes NW currently uses in Asia that are authorized to use the shorter runway are the 757 and the A330. The short runway ADDS about 25-30 minutes of taxi time to and/or from the gates at the terminals we currently occupy.

Thats a lot of Jet-A and block to block pay.

Can we say a very full 767ER and 765's. Look for them. The will be in an airport in Asia soon. They need lots of concrete when taking off fully loaded. So does the 777.
