Pay to play
BREAKING:
Mesa Airlines has announced it will purchase 29 Pipistrel light sport aircraft for use by cadet pilots, to build time at a cost of $25 per flight hour.

25/he is extremely cheap (wonder if wet/dry rate) but if you flew 10 hours a day doing just pattern work assuming all over ATP required hours were met, you would have your 1500 in 5 months assuming you flew every day for 10 hours.

As someone who is still researching different schools/paths to ATP, I was fully expecting to go to a Zero-to-Hero school and go through a grueling 1-2 years as a CFI to get the hours. Now, it looks like the best option is to get my commercial cert for cheap and then sell my soul to Mesa. If they offer financing for the flight club I'll sign up right now.

Mesa is subsidizing the time build. And they still are highest regional pay in the industry.
But after your ratings the $30k cost to burn holes in the sky (what a waste of time and money), it is still unaffordable for most aspiring pilots.

This rumor/myth has to be displaced. I paid for all my hours because I did not want to do CFI, and I was successful in airline training.
I learned a LOT and gained a lot of experience, much more than a CFI ever would.
Me, and all my other time building pals who have done the very same thing (8+) have made it through without any issues. The good chunk of them in majors right now, and a couple at legacies.
