2 jumpseats- 1 "add'l crew member" seat behind each of the pilot seats...

5 pt racing harness and a nasty quick don that they'll brief you on. Uses either a hotmike intercom or newer boxes have VOX, they'll loan you a headset most likely. PIC may not offer a seat for a takeoff or landing in the combat zone, usually actual crew is up there scanning- but if you're familiar and it's briefed, might happen, but if you want to see a t/o or ldg- it's easier if it's not one in the box..

Cute gals get better chances of sitting upstairs!

Side note. Urban legend of a C-17 mission taking some troops back home out of Afghanistan. As the C-17 lifted off, a dude leans over to the gal beside him and says "Hey, how does it feel to be ugly again?' Rumor has it he got into lots of trouble.

Correction to above..

Like any new aircraft, it had some growing pains. The Buddha moniker came from the 90s when it didn't fly that much because of maintenance issues.

Heard something similar to that. A C-17 flight leaving the Deid had a loadmaster sitting at the door waving a plastic stick like a wand. As all the girls boarded he shook his wand in magician fashion and said, "You're not pretty anymore...next...you're not pretty anymore...next." Heard he got busted as well. Gotta love those desert queens.

I thought the original nickname came from the fat face and the winglets reminded people of Bullwinkle, the Moose... not right?

I tell ya what, in this Navy pilots opinion, I think the C-17 looks awesome. I'm a transport guy as well and comparing what I flew in the fleet to the C-17, maybe thats why I like the look of the 'Moose' or whatever the 17 drivers call it.

I was in Bahrain a few years back and we were parked next to a C-2. I hopped in the seat of the C-2 and felt like I went back 30 years in time. Hats off to you guys for finding the ship and the 3 wire on a dark night with the technology you have (or don't have ).

Back in 99 we had to go pick up a sailor at Travis, emergency leave. So we park, shut down and wait. Finally a big C-17 shows up and parks next to us. I eventually get a chance to inside, go up to the cockpit. Amazing. So one of the pilots asks if he can see our cockpit. Sure but I ask him if he's ever seen one of those WWII movies with views of the bomber cockpit. He seemed confused but once inside the COD's front office...he understood. I still remember his words...."ohh"....and that was all Landing at night on the boat (I was a part of VRC-30 and VAW-120) when we did that was never a good time in the COD. Thankfully it eventually went away.
