I was thinking more like Bagram.

Diego seems kind of far away, there's plenty of places in the gulf they could park.

I would think Bagram too, except, if we could have gone to Bagram this whole time, why weren't we?

My understanding is that they don't have the fuel infrastructure to support us there.

They definitely didn't have the ramp space when I was there in '05. Maybe they added a lot more with the new runway...

Read this in the AF Times today:
Sarbayev also complained the United States has failed to adequately compensate Kyrgyzstan for $650,000 worth of damage caused to a civilian Tu-154 plane when it collided with a U.S. KC-135 tanker aircraft.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't that Russian plane rear end our tanker? Why would the U.S. be liable for that?

Okay, so we'll still be able to use the base, but for limited purposes. I'll be curious to see how much things actually change, if at all.

Didn't the KC-135 crew call "clear of the runway" when they weren't and the American controller, not realizing they weren't clear of the runway, cleared the Russian for takeoff.

The Americans are to blame.

The Russian guy said in heavily accented english during landing Rollout "Texico 1" (Not Sure about callsign) Are you clear of the Runway ? " To which they said "Roger"

He then cleared the other airplane to take off.

I cannot understand the Russian controller in the video without subtitles.

What video are you referencing? Is it the one linked to in the NYT article?

US to keep using Kyrgyz air base
The agreement comes four months after the Kyrgyz president ordered the US to close the base [AFP] The United States and Kyrgyzstan have agreed to a tentative deal that would allow the American military the continued use of a key air base in the central Asian nation.
A Kyrgyz parliamentary committee on Tuesday approved the deal to allow the US to use the Manas air base as a "centre of transit shipments" for US-led military forces in Afghanistan.
The committee approved the deal after the US agreed to pay more than triple the rent it currently pays for using the base, the Associated Press news agency reported.
Kadyrbek Sarbayev, the Kyrgyz foreign minister, said rent under the new deal will increase to $60m a year from the current $17.4m.
The US will also pay $37m to build new aircraft parking slots and storage areas, and another $30m for new navigation systems, the Associated Press reported.
'Deteriorating situation'
Sarbayev told the committee that Kyrgyzstan was worried about the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan, saying the situation could destabilise the Central Asian region as a whole.
The deal now goes to the full parliament, where it could be approved as early as the end of the week.
The US embassy in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital, called the deal a crucial boost for coalition forces.
"We applaud the decision by the Kyrgyz Republic to continue to play a key role as the international community broadens and deepens its commitment to bringing stability and security to Afghanistan and the region," Michelle Yerkin, an embassy spokeswoman, said.
The agreement comes four months after Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the president of Kyrgyzstan, signed a bill to close the base, giving the US six months to shut it down.
Bakiyev complained at the time that the US was not paying enough in rent for the base.
US officials had expressed hope that Kyrgyzstan would change its mind, indicating that negotiations on the amount paid for its maintenance could be held.
Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan, had also appealed to Kyrgyz officials to continue to allow coalition troops to use the base.
The base is used as a transit point for 15,000 troops and 500 tonnes of cargo monthly to and from Afghanistan.
The US opened the base just after its offensive in Afghanistan began in 2001, following the September 11 attacks.
