I happened to be on hold with with them when I saw this thread. They're about to lose my business too.

They turn off my credit card every time I travel...but I'm freakin in the military and an airline pilot!

I've resorted to asking every person that answers the phone if they are a USAA employee or an outsourced call center script reader. When I get through to a USAA employee the experience is generally good.

I'm not sure why I'm still with them, they've screwed up investments, insurance, claims, and aren't nearly as good of a deal as they were when I signed up in the early 80's.

Shame on me. But shame on them too for making jump through "who do work for hoops" just to get somewhat acceptable customer service.

Amica for auto, Armed Forces Insurance for home. Disclaimer: I am still with USAA (38 yrs), but increasingly unhappy. Just haven't raised the arming handles yet.

Default Stay away from USAA Mortgage.

I had a similar experience with USAA Mortgage. By far the worst mortgage company I have ever dealt with (we've bought 6 times). They were slow, incompetent, script reading automatons. They missed the closing several times and really didn't seem to care. They also and changed the settlement cost at least 3 times within a few days of closing. Never had a problem with the banking or insurance. Although my rate did go up 22% this year. Maybe I can save 15% or more in 15 min if I talk to the lizard.

Dumped USAA car insurance last year - they raised my rates even though I've been with them for 17 years and never filed a single claim. Never done a mortgage through them nor home insurance - their rates aren't competitive. Still bank with them, though. No complaints there (so far).

28 years with them..... little or no complaints.... and that includes a total loss from Katrina. They did a year ago drop my Wind and Hail insurance but I was able to secure it from the state wind pool and my total insurance bill only was up about 5% so again no real complaints.

I do believe in general things have declined at USAA since they stopped having it as an "officers" only organization. If nothing else they have grown in size tremendously and that alone has caused some service issues plus rate issues as they absorb more and more liability.

The good news is for those of you who no longer use USAA and had P&C insurance with them for any amount of time you should have gotten a nice check from them 6 months after you were no longer doing business with them as your SSA was closed.

They went from Officers only to all mil to a retired Sgts dog is eligible. I pulled all our money out of their bank after major issues...inlcuding loss of online access for ~6 months and buffoonery with our new mortgage. Still have my homeowners as they have been great and still have auto although Imforesee myself going back to my State Farm agent one day.
