Not that USAA is any better--in fact; it's official,,, they suck since expanding the coverage pool, but the point is that Insurance companies are NOT insurance companies anymore. State Farm offers competetive rates simply because they (and the rest) don't pay many of the claims. Ask a Katrina victim about State Farm insurance and you'll start a fight. The new agreement is this: We (the insurance company) will offer a competivive rate with the understanding that if you make a claim, and the cliam is not too big or widespred (Katrina) then maybe we'll pay. So who's the real insurance company---You are ! Never ever think you're covered for anything by anyone--have a plan B. We've esentially come full circle.

Default I dumped USAA a couple of days ago.

I closed every policy I had with USAA and changed to another insurance company. Why? Multiple reasons.

Like many here, I believe the unique company I joined 27 years ago has become just another big corporation. The value I perceived seems diminished and available elsewhere at much less cost.

Results? $1100/yr premium savings with better/more coverage. Really. Plus a SSA account of $6,000 returned to me in the next 6 months. I should have switched a long time ago.

Life Insurance has been a big discussions in my office recently (if you saw my work peers you'd understand why ); so I thought I would share a recent reality check from a work peer.

This person is a recent retiree from the USAF.
One month ago, USAA would have given him a premium of $200+/month as a USAF Flight Check pilot. This month (with no increase in age mind you), the same policy will cost him $500+/month because he now does the same job with the FAA.

I'll contrast this with my own life insurance with Liberty Mutual who did not increase the premium at all as long as my flying was all professional (work related). Now recreational GA flying would have additional premiums - but I don't think that is uncommon.

In both cases - USAA lost more business.

I've been with USAA for 29 years. I have both home and auto, but they keep jacking up my rates. Hate to say it, but it might be time to move on.

Just paid my home and auto premium two days ago. I could not believe how high it has gotten.

Been with USAA since 1983. May start comparison-shopping....

USAA told me they required 30 to 45 days to process my home loan. But when the short sale bank set an unrealistic closing date, USAA processed and closed in 8 work days.

Never had anything but outstanding service from USAA.

After insuring with USAA for nearly 20 years, our real estate agent (USAA mover's advantage appointed, by the way) recommended we compare homeowner's rates when she saw what USAA was charging for premiums on our new house. I got quotes from 5 other large insurance firms, and they were all substantially less than USAA. When I called USAA to ask them about it, the manager with whom I spoke did not try to convince me to stay with USAA using logical argument or even a marketing pitch; rather he implied I was foolish to consider insuring with anyone else.

I cancelled all my USAA policies right away. I went with Metlife, who provided better coverage for over $1000 less in premiums per year (2 cars, 2 houses). That was about 6 years ago and I have been very happy with Metlife. I still bank with USAA and got a quick online auto quote recently just to see if anything had changed, and USAA was still significantly higher.

My only regret is not bailing on USAA insurance sooner.

Navy Mutual Aid provides a much better deal on term life insurance than USAA, also.

If you don't mind me asking who did you choose for your auto insurance? I am looking into making the change there. If the savings is as significant as it sounds, I will end up having to pull the plug myself. I have been with them for about 10 years, but I can't keep paying more.

Metlife. I recommend getting multiple quotes on your own before you make a decision. Good luck!
