For those of you in the mortgage or refi market, National Bank of Kansas City gets rave reviews over at BO. I used them myself for a refi in 2011, great experience. Low rate, no fees, great service.

I did what they asked, and we're almost done. This USAA experience was a good one overall.
Same here as far as oddball questions:
1. Need a letter of employment from current employer stating you work there even though I had already provided pay statements.
2. A signed letter from me stating how my active duty service correlates to my current job.
3. Letter from my parents stating they have not provided me any money in the past which is a loan.

Dump USAA for car insurance last December. Twice as much as the GEICO policy. Less than a month in to the new policy daughter found lightpole with the car. Lightpole won and car totalled. Claim process went smooth and after a little negotiation "(while deployed) and reexamining similiar cars through their third party evaluator came away with a reasonable valuation on the car. Called USAA just for grins and found out they used the same evalutor for determining car value. Rates for now, just renewed, didnt budge. I will assume since it was weather related it wasnt held against us.

For mortgages and car financing Pen Fed has some great rates. Refi and financed an used car (1.49 %, 60 months for 11 yr old car..basically free money) through them this past year

Read this. Called geico. Half the price for exact same policy. Guess its time to bail. Been with them 17 years, not really sure when the prices vs quality went bad, but it took me until now to notice.

This is a decent site to compare homeowners policies in Texas. Unfortunately, not all companies participate.

I think you're missing the point of this thread. They used to be great. They aren't so much any more. The massive media blitz to gain new members ("I got my membership from my 8th cousin's niece, who served in Iraq") and the dilution of the quality of the membership, has made USAA more expensive in many cases from even the traditional insurance giants.

If you want to throw an extra $1,200/year at Usaa just because you've always used them, then feel free.

Of course there are still cases where usaa might be the best. Point is, shop around. You may be surprised.

Glad I could help. It is sad that they have fallen from where they once were. After 26 years with them for auto insurance it was "tough" to leave but they are in a different league with their current rates.

For those of you who dumped USAA, how long did it take to get your SSB refund?
