Default Transfer of GI Bill

Can someone explain how to fill out the form to transfer the GI Bill to dependents?

I retire in two years and want to split the GI Bill between my 9th grader and 7th grader and wife. So for my 9th grader do I put the dates as 2013 to 2017 with 12 months of tuition? The 7th grader 2015-2019 with 12 and my wife what if I only know she wants to go to school sometime in the future?

Anyone know who to ask? I think I understand the eligibility and all

I am a part time Reservist

Since I retired about 18 months ago after 20 years AD I can't transfer my GI Bill. Anyone else in this same situation? I'm considering signing up for some courses at some point and taking the benefits for my dependents' college fund. I believe a veteran who uses the benefits gets a living allowance equal to an E-5 or something close to that. I could take those funds and sock 'em away for the kids. Online courses would be the best...maybe I would even try to pass the courses, but really as long as I have the allowances coming in I'm getting some of the benefit so I really don't care about the grade--just need to be able to take the courses and get the living allowance. At the end of it I may even get the $1200 I put into it during my first year of service. Of course I'd rather have the option of just transfering the tuitition benefits to my children, but since the DoD and congress don't think enough of my service to have allowed for that this seems to be the next best option. Any one else considering similar COA?

Phone is always busy at VA. As far as I can tell you just put on the form anyone who might use the GI Bill and you can revoke or change after retirement, but not add children. I can't figure out why I am projecting a date for the use, like 2013-2017. Why not just put 2009-2025 or some large number. I dont understand the date part.

I did the transfer last week to my 6 year old son. I think I did just what you said and put something like 2010-2028. They really didn't make it clear on the website.

Try asking the VFW or one of the other veteran's organizations. They can usually help with this kind of stuff.

viperdriver,

This is from a fact sheet I received at work. PM your email address if you would like a copy of the fact sheet.

What do I put in the begin and end dates for transferring benefits?

In the "Transfer Begin Date" put today's date (date of request)
In the "Transfer End Date"
· for your spouse, put the date 15 years after you are expected to leave Active Duty/Selected Reserve
· for a child, put the date your child turns 26 years old

This site may answer some questions if you can't get a hold of the VA.

GI Bill

Awesome new site by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. I'm a member, these guys lobby on Capitol Hill for us and get stuff done. They actually had a hand in getting this bill passed quickly.

So, if you can not use your benefits, you can transfer them to your dependants? Has it always been this way? Thanks
