That seems to be the prevailing consensus. Which just means it's another filter/hoop to be jumped through for the here and now.

It also seems to indicate whether or not a pilot is a "training risk" according to the professor.

Oh well, "they're house, they're rules" as they say.

A good solid AFOQT score and PCSM score will help you the most. I, like you, worked two jobs through college averaging 40 hours a week between the two and graduated with a 3.0 after 4.5 years. I had a pilot score of 90 and a composite score of 75 on the AFOQT and a 98 PCSM score. I got picked up in Aug. for a C-130 unit, so it is quite possible for you. Just keep that gpa up and study your butt off for the AFOQT! Since you already have your PPL, that will help your PCSM score as well and any hours you have will increase your score (maxing out at 500 hours I believe). And as others have said, a lot of it depends on the individual unit as well and what they weight as more important. Do things that will build your resume and give you experience with leading people. If you can, I would suggest getting involved in student group or two and try to get into a leadership position. Above all, don't get discouraged! It took me 2.5 years and 6 or so interviews with various units before I got selected. Just keep in mind that you have to start UPT before you turn 30.

Good luck!

Mo,
Don't let your grades get you down. Every unit has it's own personality and requirements, which vary as to the importance of each. The only way to find the edge is to fall off sometimes. I had a quarter in college where it was like the scene from Animal House, Deltas, have you seen your grades... Mr. Blutarsky - 0 point 0. Made for a nice ice breaker in the interview. The sq that hired me liked my work history, flying experience and I had strong afoqt scores. Better lucky than good. Realize, the pilots sitting on the boards, probably have done so for many years and will know in the first 10 minutes of the interview if you are what they are looking for. Someone they can go to war with, count on, hang out with, and perform up to their standards. Be persistent and realize if you don't apply, the answer will most definitely be no. Get the interview and then just be able to give a reasonable explanation to your grades. If for some reason, you don't get an interview where you would like, it is totally acceptable to call and ask what you could improve upon for the next board. Almost all will be very straight forward and tell you if it is your grades or your afoqt scores, etc. Get to the unit you are interested in, let them see your face and check in from time to time. Best of luck!

I have been on several Guard UPT hiring boards.

From personal experience, grades do not matter.

We were looking at the big picture, and what kind of person (potential officer/pilot/TDY drinking buddy) you are.

Some of the 4.0 GPA guys we hired didn't work out at all.

Most of the 2.5 GPA guys we hired are the best dudes in the squadron.

PS I had a 2.99 GPA; which I rounded up, of course.

What Navigatro said above. I promise you my grades in college wouldn't have gotten me into high school! If asked, explain why you aren't a slacker an move on. I promise your grades were not lower than mine! PS, I was hired on a central board selection.

Default Thanks!

Guys this is so encouraging! Thank you so much. It makes me want to work even harder this last year and a half or so to do well. I'm really looking forward to the flying. The book learning is tough but stick and rudder is just a calling for me (like most of you).

Again thanks. I'm looking forward to joining you someday. Good to know there's some humans I can explain this to that are on the hiring boards.

I graduated with a GPA much lower than 3.0. I actually got an F in a class (and a couple D's). However, I was extremly active in student/Greek life and held many leadership positions. I also worked part time, and got an instrument rating while going to school. All my guard interviews where much more concerned with my leadership experiences than my less than stellar grades.

Although there are some extremely intelligent dudes in the squadron, most are just average joes. For example, I have been flying in the guard for 6 years with good career progression.......I can barely read. Keep working hard, and refuse to be told no. You will get there. Good luck.

When we interview dudes at our squadron (and yes, I'm on the interview board and have a vote), grades don't even come up. Granted we are hiring people that have already gotten their wings, but I can't imagine transcripts being in the top three most important aspects. I am, however, going to revisit reCalcitrant's hiring package. If I remember right, he "volunteered" that he was a 4.0 student.....but that may have been out of 10.0 . Being a good dude is more important.
