So far, a C-5 has not exploded in flight. Those systems were built-in so that the wings could get bullets shot through them without igniting.

Would an electrical arc completely submerged in fuel cause an explosion? What if a wing just fell off? Would that separation lead to an explosion and/or fire midair?

A submerged arc, no.

A midair breakup would normally cause a fireball as fuel is atomized and exposed to ignition sources.

C17 still carries crew chutes. No idea about Fred.

No chutes on Herks anymore. When they were taking them off, it was said "no one's ever used them anyhow", yet I know of at least one case where some crew members were able to bail out of an AC-130 over Somalia about 20 years ago.

Default Tanker down in Kyrgyzstan?

Does anyone know if they've ruled out a possible shoot down / missile / man pad?

Default C5 and Chutes

The last I saw chutes on a C5 for a standard mission was in 1979. We had them hanging on a pallet at the first pallet position on the cargo floor front right. Had to wear them during A/R. By about summer 1979 they went away. Not sure what happened after the C5 entered the SOLL II world. Maybe they were reintroduced.

Might be a thread drift, but didn't a 135 from Milwaukee burn on the ramp prior to takeoff? This was a few years back...

Nothing official, but I heard they were going around thunderstorms. Possibly an over-G? Other possibility is an internal fuel leak, which is somewhat common, or perhaps the ACM coming apart and puncturing the center wing tank.

I really don't think it was a fuel pump overheating, submerged in way too much fuel for the phase they were in. We don't have any nitrogen/NOGS system on the tanker FWIW.

Again, all speculation, I don't suspect we'll hear anything for quite some time unless there is a systemic issue which requires a fleet mod or even grounding.

It is really sad, these birds have been ridden really really hard over the past 10 years flying 180K+ fuel loads out of the desert. Thoughts and prayers go out to their families, it is everybody's worse nightmare.
